On Sunday, authorities in Nevada state lines reported the discovery of apparent human remains in Lake Mead, a significant development amidst a prolonged drought and increasingly scorching weather conditions in the West. The discovery occurred as water levels at the reservoir reached a record low, prompting a thorough investigation by officials and park rangers.
On August 16, the Lake Mead Interagency Communications Center received a report of potential human remains at Boulder Beach, a location on the western side of the lake within Nevada state lines. National Park Service rangers and the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department responded to the scene, initiating an investigation into the incident. No additional information is currently available regarding the nature or location of the remains.
The bones were discovered by a woman and her friend and his daughter on the shoreline of Boulder Beach, which is located on the western side of the lake within Nevada state lines. According to Dianelis Molina Cruz, the woman and her friend were playing with the rocks when the friend grabbed the jaw, resulting in the discovery. The remains were identified as belonging to a male, possibly of the 1980s, and were found near Hemenway Harbor, just a couple of miles south of Boulder Beach.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department stated that they responded to the location alongside the Clark County Coroner’s Office, but they were not investigating the incident. Water levels have reached historic lows at Lake Mead, which is the largest reservoir in the United States. On Monday, the water level dipped to 1,039.77 feet above sea level, according to the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, well below the previous record low set in July 2022.
The remains were discovered during a routine investigation into the unusually low water levels, which researchers attribute to the concerning drop in water levels. The remains were located near Hemenway Harbor, a location where several human remains were found in Lake Mead in the past year, including a body discovered in May 2022 and a shirt and belt found on the remains of a man in 1998. The remains were initially identified as the same individual, Claude Russell Pensinger, who disappeared in July 1998. His cause of death was not determined. The body was believed to be from the 1980s and has not yet been identified. The barrel, found in July 2022, was one of several discoveries of remains in Lake Mead that year. On three dates in July and August 2022, human remains were found in the Boulder Beach area. Those were later identified as the same person, Thomas Erndt, who had drowned in 2002, and Donald Smith in 1974. The discovery of the remains in Callville Bay on May 7, 2022, was later identified as the same person, Thomas Erndt, who had disappeared in July 1998, according to the Clark County medical examiner. The remains of another drowning victim, Donald Smith, who was believed to have drowned in 1974, were found in October 2022. The investigation continues, and authorities are working to determine the identity of the individual and the circumstances surrounding the discovery.
