A wave of public outrage has swept through Syria following the death of Omar Gamira, a former ‘White Helmet’ rescuer, following what authorities are calling a brutal torture incident in police custody. The incident, which occurred on Monday in Latakia province, a day after Gamira’s hospitalization, has ignited widespread protests and prompted nationwide plans for further demonstrations starting Tuesday. The circumstances surrounding the death are deeply sensitive, given years of widespread police and security force torture, particularly under the former regime of Bashir al-Assad, which endured for over two decades. The incident is being viewed as a stark reminder of the continued risk of death and mistreatment within Syrian detention facilities, a practice that saw more than 200,000 people die in prisons, including, tragically, at Sednaya prison. Under President Ahmed al-Sharaa, who led the military overthrow of al-Assad, the establishment of the rule of law remains a major challenge for the Syrian government. The Latakia Internal Security Command issued a statement on Monday detailing the investigation into the events at the Haffeh police station, where Gamira was detained. The investigation, initiated following claims circulating on social media depicting him receiving intensive medical care at the Tishreen University Hospital, suggests a prolonged period of physical abuse. Initial reports indicate Gamira was held for three days before his condition deteriorated and was transferred to medical care, but the exact nature of the abuse remains unclear. Family members allege that security officers ignored warnings about Gamira’s chronic haemophilia and subjected him to severe, continuous physical abuse during a 72-hour period, triggering catastrophic internal bleeding. “He sustained a brain haemorrhage as well as other internal bleeding in his abdomen, and he died last night,” stated Heidi Pett, reporting from Latakia on Monday, referencing a statement from the Ministry of Interior’s Security Command. The Ministry of Interior’s Security Command stated that the investigation would examine the circumstances of Gamira’s detention and whether the procedures carried out against him complied with legal requirements. The Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported that the investigation would also consider the health condition of the young man, and Interior Minister Anas Khattab expressed his condolences to Gamira’s family. The Ministry of Interior’s Security Command reiterated that any individual found responsible for the death or mistreatment of Gamira will be dealt with ‘firmly’ in accordance with the laws, Khattab added, emphasizing that the government is committed to upholding the law. The public reaction to the case underscores a persistent concern – that death and mistreatment within detention facilities, while perhaps not on the scale of the al-Assad era, continues to be a significant problem. Pett notes that, following the fall of the regime, many Syrians hoped that those practices would also fall away, with the intention of turning the country towards a more stable future. Under al-Assad’s rule, more than 200,000 people died in Syrian prisons, including, tragically, at Sednaya prison, which outside Damascus, is a notorious facility documenting mass deaths, with reports suggesting that it constitutes a “human slaughterhouse”. According to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the Sednaya prison outside Damascus is a prominent example of human rights violations. The situation has been further complicated by the fact that the Syrian government has not yet released a formal statement addressing the incident, though officials have repeatedly emphasized the importance of upholding the rule of law.”
