The Paramount Chief of the Sunyani Traditional Area, Odeefour Ogyeamansan Boahen Korkor II, has issued a stark warning to divisional and sub-chiefs across the Sunyani Traditional Area, demanding a firm crackdown on the unauthorized sale and encroachment of cemetery lands. This declaration underscores a growing concern within the Traditional Council regarding the escalating issue of land disputes and illegal development activities threatening the integrity of the area’s heritage and resources. The Chief’s concerns stem from a recent commitment to preside as President of the Sunyani Traditional Council, a position he has now taken seriously with the gravity of the situation.

His official address, delivered at a ceremony held at the Nana Bosoma Royal Palace in Sunyani on Friday, August 14, 2026, served as a formal articulation of these anxieties. The Paramount Chief stressed the vital importance of upholding the traditions and customs of the Traditional Area, emphasizing the sacred nature of cemeteries and the need for responsible stewardship of these lands. He explicitly cautioned that chiefs found to be involved in the unauthorized sale or encroachment of cemetery lands would face swift and severe consequences, as outlined in the Sunyani Traditional Council’s sanctions protocol – a measure designed to deter such misconduct.

Odeefour Ogyeamansan Boahen Korkor II’s warning isn’t solely focused on individual transgressions; he has also voiced deep apprehension regarding the activities of estate developers and private builders who appear to be encroaching upon the boundaries of cemeteries and waterways, erecting unauthorized structures. These activities, he asserted, represent a significant erosion of the traditional boundaries that define the area and pose a considerable threat to the long-term preservation of these invaluable resources.

Furthermore, the Chief underscored the critical role of the Traditional Council in maintaining order and safeguarding the land reserved for public use. He repeatedly emphasized the imperative to protect lands designated for purposes beyond private ownership, highlighting the crucial responsibility of preserving these heritage sites for future generations. This underscores a fundamental principle within the Traditional Council’s governance – safeguarding the land as a cornerstone of cultural identity and community well-being.

The issuance of this warning comes amidst a heightened focus on monitoring and supervision of lands under the Traditional Council’s jurisdiction. The Chief stressed the need for intensified vigilance and proactive measures to prevent further encroachment and illicit developments. He urged sub-chiefs to prioritize integrity in all their duties, actively discouraging actions that could trigger disputes and protracted litigation. Specifically, he urged them to unequivocally defend the rights of those who hold the land sacred, reinforcing the significance of protecting these vital areas.

The Traditional Council’s stance is designed to address the escalating issue through a multi-faceted approach. The Chief’s call for a renewed commitment to uphold the traditions and customs of the Traditional Area is a critical component of this strategy, while simultaneously strengthening oversight mechanisms to ensure the protection of land resources. The Council’s commitment to maintaining stability within the Traditional Area is a key element, and the Chief’s warning underscores the seriousness with which the Council views this matter. The long-term implications of this situation – the potential for further land disputes, legal challenges, and a weakening of community cohesion – are substantial, demanding immediate attention and decisive action. The Council’s actions will be closely scrutinized to ensure a sustainable and lawful approach to land management within the Sunyani Traditional Area.

This situation reflects a broader trend of growing concerns about land rights and the preservation of cultural heritage across West Africa. The Paramount Chief’s leadership and the Traditional Council’s commitment to upholding these principles are vital for maintaining the stability and prosperity of the region.
