President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to hold a national referendum on proposed constitutional amendments alongside the 2027 District Assembly Elections. This announcement was made during a recent Resetting Ghana Tour Citizens’ Engagement event in Bolgatanga, Upper East Region. President Mahama stated that the referendum would be held on the same day as the District Assembly Elections, allowing voters to decide on proposed changes to the Constitution while simultaneously electing their Assembly Members. He further explained that if the referendum receives the required approval, the proposed changes to the Constitution would be implemented, with the Constitutional Review Implementation Committee tasked with reviewing and consolidating the government’s position paper and reports from the Constitutional Review Commission. The committee will categorize proposed amendments into entrenched and non-entrenched provisions, with the requirement for a minimum of 40% of registered voters to vote in favor and 75% of those voters to express a ‘yes’ to the amendment, according to President Mahama. He emphasized that the referendum will be conducted alongside next year’s District Assembly Elections. In addition to this, President Mahama directed the Minister of Roads and Highways to ensure the construction of a road in the Kologo Traditional Area, following a request from its Paramount Chief, Naba Clifford Abagna Tandegrewongrekugre V. Furthermore, he tasked the Minister of Education with establishing a Senior High School in the Kologo Traditional Area. The directives stemmed from two separate requests from the traditional leader regarding improved road infrastructure and the establishment of a secondary school in the area. The President’s announcement follows a recent government briefing on the constitutional amendments and the potential for a referendum, with the aim of ensuring the Constitution is updated and reflects evolving societal values.
