The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has initiated a temporary shutdown of four hospitality establishments in the Central Region, including Elmina Beach Resort, Savoy Hotel, Veke Executive Lodge, and Wiz Homes, all in Cape Coast, following a series of regulatory violations that have prompted the authorities to take swift action. This action, part of an ongoing effort to tighten regulations and ensure compliance within the tourism sector, comes amidst heightened scrutiny of hospitality businesses across the region.
The GTA issued caution notices to several facilities, including Elmina Beach Resort, which were subsequently shut down after failing to meet numerous requirements outlined in their regulations. These violations encompass a range of issues, including operating without proper licenses, substantial non-payment of the tourism levy, providing inadequate facilities and services, and several other breaches of established legal standards.
According to Regional Director of Tourism, Charles Buabin, the shutdown was triggered by failing to comply with specific cautions issued by the GTA. He stated that all accommodation establishments, including Airbnb properties, are legally mandated to register and obtain the necessary licenses before commencing operations. ‘In the laws of Ghana, Airbnb is not a facility. All accommodation enterprises are supposed to be registered and licensed before they can operate,’ Buabin explained. He emphasized the importance of proper licensing for all hospitality businesses.
The affected facilities are being instructed to rectify the identified deficiencies and pay applicable regulatory fines to facilitate their reopening. Buabin stressed the necessity for the public to diligently check the licensing status of any hospitality establishment they plan to visit, ensuring that all licenses are currently valid before patronage. He further highlighted the continued enforcement exercise, particularly during the Oguaa Fetu Afahye celebrations in September, aiming to sanitize the hospitality industry and guarantee patrons receive high-quality and dependable services.
