The Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) has declared a continuation of its strike, intensifying a long-standing dispute with the government over perceived inequities in the treatment of university administrators and senior members. Secretary Charles Aidoo stated this amidst a growing sense of frustration amongst the association’s members, who have endured what they describe as years of unfairness and a failure to deliver tangible results from government’s attempts to address their concerns. GAUA’s stance is rooted in a history of repeated engagements and assurances from successive governments, which have failed to resolve the core issues that have fueled the strike.

GAUA’s history extends back over four years, starting with a series of meetings and agreements with former Education Ministers, with the association initially attempting to establish a committee to tackle the disparities. However, these efforts ultimately proved unsuccessful, and the committee’s work failed to yield meaningful outcomes. Mr. Aidoo emphasized that the association’s members are resolute, stating that the persistent issue of unfair treatment and remuneration discrepancies has been ongoing for far too long. He asserted that the prolonged situation has left members deeply frustrated and determined to see concrete action from the government.

“Our members are resolute,” Mr. Aidoo explained, “Because we’ve taken this for far too long. The cheating has been there for far too long. And our members are simply not happy. They want to see results.” He further stated that the association has been consistently raising issues regarding disparities in the conditions of service and the compensation of university administrators and other non-teaching senior staff members. The association is now focusing on fairness and equity in the administration of university personnel.

GAUA’s demand is not merely about acknowledgment; it’s about demonstrable action. The association is actively seeking a meeting with the Minister of Education on Tuesday, August 16th, where they intend to present a clear roadmap for outcomes rather than mere assurances. The outcome of this meeting will be a pivotal moment determining whether the association will continue its strike or call for a complete cessation of its activities. The association has been consistently raising concerns about disparities in service and compensation for university administrators and senior staff members, and the strike represents a significant escalation of this issue.

According to a statement released by GAUA, the association’s members are calling for a fair and equitable treatment of university administrators and other non-teaching senior staff, emphasizing the need for genuine progress and tangible results rather than continued political rhetoric. The association’s position is that the time for assurances is over, and members now expect to see a resolution to the underlying problems that have been ongoing for many years. The group has already initiated a legal review of existing agreements and memoranda, suggesting a continued challenge to the current framework of governance.

This situation has significant implications for the future of university administration and the overall stability of the higher education sector in Ghana. The continued strike highlights a fundamental disconnect between the government and the university community, potentially hindering educational progress and impacting student outcomes.
