The discussion centered on the dangers of toxic byproducts released during illegal mining, which Dr. Floret Maame Owusu, a health researcher, explained could alter cells at a genetic level, leading to dire consequences in future generations. She emphasized that the vulnerability of unborn children is particularly concerning, with experts stating that exposure to these chemicals can result in developmental issues in children born in areas where galamsey operations are prevalent. “For pregnant women who are exposed to these chemicals, they end up having children who have some developmental issues,” Dr. Forgive Awo Norvivor stated. The discussion also raised the alarming reality that roughly 60 percent of rural populations still lack access to clean water, a critical factor contributing to the health risks. Experts stressed that the current focus on simply enforcing against miners is insufficient; a proactive, preventative approach is urgently needed.
