The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has issued a stark warning against the sale of food and beverages contaminated by floodwaters, prompting a heightened level of caution amongst the public and regulatory agencies. The FDA’s directive follows a significant incident involving a substantial truckload of bottled water and soft drinks, which were subsequently seized and deemed unsafe for consumption.

The incident, detailed in a press release issued on October 26, 2023, stems from complaints received by the FDA regarding a beverage distributor in Alajo, located at Bubiashie, following a recent flooding event. According to the FDA, the distributor allegedly moved the affected products to a residence at Bubiashie, where they were being washed and prepared for resale, a process that exposed the products to potential contamination.

Investigation revealed that approximately one truckload of bottled water and soft drinks, exhibiting significant mud contamination, was seized. The products were meticulously examined, and the FDA confirmed that the mud covering the packaging, bottles, and caps posed a significant risk of contamination and the potential transmission of diseases such as cholera, typhoid, and dysentery. The FDA stressed that washing the exterior of bottles or shrink-wrapped packs does not guarantee the safety of the contents.

Furthermore, the FDA reported that a similar complaint was received from the Kaneshie Police, leading to an arrest and subsequent granting of bail to the owner of the affected products. A subsequent seizure of a further quantity of flood-damaged beverages was also conducted.

The FDA explained that floodwater carries a complex mixture of sewage, refuse, and other harmful contaminants, posing a considerable risk to packaging integrity. It cautioned that washing the exterior of bottles or shrink-wrapped packs does not eliminate the risk of contamination, particularly when products are submerged.

Consumers are now urged to actively avoid consuming any food or beverages displaying visible signs of damage to their packaging, bottles, caps, or labels. The FDA is emphasizing a heightened awareness of potential risks stemming from unusual locations where flood-damaged goods are being offered, or from sellers with questionable sources.

The FDA has directed manufacturers, distributors, and retailers to immediately cease the practice of washing, repackaging, relabeling, or reselling affected products. Instead, the FDA recommends that these products be quarantined and immediately contacted for verification and safe disposal, prioritizing public health and safety.

The FDA has already launched a surveillance operation in flood-affected communities, encouraging the public to report any suspected cases of flood-damaged food or beverages to their nearest FDA office or police station. They are also appealing to individuals to be vigilant and report any unusual situations that may involve potentially contaminated products to ensure public safety.
