The Asutifi North District Assembly in the Ahafo Region has officially commenced the distribution of 1,500 bags of fertilizer to 500 farmers, marking a significant step towards bolstering agricultural production within the district. This initiative, spearheaded by the government’s commitment to enhancing farmer livelihoods and strengthening the agricultural sector, represents a substantial investment in the region’s economic future. The fertilizers, distributed free of charge, comprise a carefully balanced mix of Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium (NPK) – 1,000 bags – alongside 500 bags of urea, a crucial component for soil enrichment. Speaking to Adom News during the distribution exercise at Kenyasi, District Chief Executive (DCE) for Asutifi North, Hafiz Dauda, emphasized the profound significance of this endeavor, stating that it reflects the government’s dedication to improving the economic well-being of rural communities. He further highlighted that farmers are expected to receive comprehensive support from various government agencies, including the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, led by Eric Opoku, to facilitate expansion of commercial farming activities. According to the DCE, increased investment in farmers translates directly into enhanced food production, contributing to both local and national economic growth and creating employment opportunities for young people. Mr. Dauda stressed the importance of strict adherence to recommended agricultural extension officer guidelines to ensure optimal fertilizer utilization and maximize yields. The Ministry of Food and Agriculture’s Director for Asutifi North, Godfred Ezena, assured beneficiaries that his office would closely monitor the application of the fertilizers, ensuring proper distribution and preventing any illicit practices. He cautioned against the sale of subsidized fertilizers, explicitly stating that any violation would result in severe penalties, including blacklisting from receiving future government-provided free fertilizer supplies. Several beneficiaries expressed gratitude for the government’s support, noting that the availability of these fertilizers is expected to significantly improve crop yields and alleviate financial burdens currently faced by farmers. Agotime Konor, a local farmer, expressed his concern regarding the incomplete completion of the district hospital and the lack of improved water supply, calling for urgent action to address these critical infrastructural needs. The distribution of fertilizers underscores the government’s broader strategy to modernize agricultural practices and ensure food security for the region.
