The Adansi Akrofuom Constituency of the Ashanti Region is experiencing a growing presence of Okada riders, prompting a significant initiative by its Member of Parliament, Joseph Azumah, to bolster their legal standing and alleviate potential complications with law enforcement. The MP has announced the acquisition of licenses for over 50 commercial motorcycle riders within the constituency, a move intended to provide practical support beyond the usual assistance provided during political campaigns and election periods.
Speaking to news correspondent Isaac K. Normanyo, Mr. Azumah emphasized the vital role Okada riders play in the community, acknowledging their contribution to informal economic activity. However, he highlighted the often-understated support these riders receive, particularly in a region where their presence can sometimes lead to friction with authorities.
The initiative, he explained, is designed to offer comprehensive assistance to the riders, encompassing crucial licensing processes. ‘We’re committed to offering more than just standard assistance,’ Mr. Azumah stated. ‘This program is designed to provide real, actionable support, ensuring these riders can operate legally and safely.’
The MP outlined a phased rollout plan, projecting that over 1,000 riders will be supported across the constituency. ‘We’re aiming to reach a significant number of riders,’ Mr. Azumah asserted. ‘This will not only help them obtain the necessary licenses but also foster a more stable and secure operational environment for the entire community.’
Furthermore, Mr. Azumah stressed the importance of riders taking their work seriously and actively avoiding substance abuse and other harmful behaviors, emphasizing the potential negative impact on young riders’ future prospects. ‘We must recognize that substance abuse can significantly undermine the progress of young riders,’ he warned. ‘It’s crucial to prioritize their well-being and ensure they can fully capitalize on the opportunities presented to them.’
The riders themselves expressed gratitude for the MP’s commitment to their situation. ‘This is incredibly timely and useful,’ stated one rider, who wished to remain anonymous. ‘Having the licenses will significantly reduce confrontations with the police and give us greater confidence to operate legally,’ they said. ‘It’s a welcome step towards a more stable and predictable environment for us.’
