The escalating controversy surrounding Dapper Music and its founder, Damilola Akinwunmi, has ignited a firestorm of accusations within Nigeria’s music industry. A recent wave of public statements from former Dapper Music artists – T.I Blaze, Seyi Vibez, and Shallipopi – reveals a complex web of allegations centering around revenue mismanagement, contract disputes, and alleged financial transparency. This isn’t just a dispute; it’s a potential systemic issue with far-reaching implications for the livelihoods of countless artists.

The allegations began with T.I Blaze’s explosive public call-out on August 14, 2026, accusing Dapper Music of failing to accurately account for revenue generated from his music. Specifically, he alleges that approximately ₦1.2 billion in revenue had gone unexplained, questioning how Virgin Music became involved in the business relationship. T.I Blaze further stated that his contract with Dapper expired in July 2026, with a seven-month waiting period, suggesting a lack of proper resolution.

Furthermore, Seyi Vibez, who previously collaborated with Dapper Music, entered the fray with his own accusations, claiming that money from his success was used to sign other artists and that Dapper benefited significantly. He warned artists remaining with the label to be cautious, suggesting potential future problems for those involved. Seyi’s intervention dramatically shifted the narrative, transforming a dispute between T.I Blaze and Dapper into a broader discussion about the experiences of former Dapper Music artists.

Shallipopi, another prominent former Dapper Music member, also voiced serious concerns, accusing the label of withholding funds owed to him. He asserted that Dapper had sold or transferred his catalogue without proper accounting, leaving 46 songs outstanding and totaling $185,000. Shallipopi threatened to report the matter to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), further intensifying the situation.

These allegations, while not independently verified, are backed by substantial evidence. In December 2024, Shallipopi formally announced his departure from Dapper Music and Dvpper Digital, alleging that his trust had been broken, his finances mishandled, and his rights as an artiste disregarded. He specifically stated that Dapper Music and Dvpper Digital were connected businesses, alleging that advances were obtained against his name and catalogue without his knowledge or approval. He repeatedly requested access to financial records, demonstrating a perceived disregard for his rights.

As of August 15, 2026, Dapper Music and Damilola Akinwunmi have not responded to these allegations. However, the situation remains highly volatile. The allegations, initially circulating on Friday, August 14, 2026, represent a significant challenge to the label’s established practices and the dynamics of artist contracts within the Nigerian music industry. The potential for legal action, financial repercussions, and reputational damage is substantial, suggesting a significant shift in the power dynamic between the label and its artists. The fallout from these accusations has undoubtedly exposed deeper issues within the industry and necessitates a thorough investigation into the financial dealings of Dapper Music and its leadership.”
