Paul Adom-Otchere, a prominent political commentator, underscored a critical shift in voter sentiment within the Ashanti Region, attributing it to a burgeoning sense of dissatisfaction with the current administration’s perceived arrogance. Speaking at the NPP Ashanti Regional Executives Election, the host of ‘Good Evening Ghana,’ Mr. Adom-Otchere asserted that this growing unease is significantly bolstering the NPP’s position within the region, a dynamic he characterizes as ‘really what’s galvanizing the NPP’s political momentum.’

He detailed a trend of voters, previously leaning towards the NDC, exhibiting increasing critical assessment of the government’s policies and actions. ‘People have been seeing the arrogance of power, particularly in the Ashanti Region of the NDC,’ he stated, highlighting a palpable shift in political alignment.

Mr. Adom-Otchere pointed to the NPP’s historical struggles to secure the loyalty of non-committed voters, a challenge exacerbated by the current administration’s perceived disregard for the electorate. He specifically accused regional government officials, including Regional Ministers and Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), of exhibiting excessive authority, a practice he describes as ‘irking them, it’s annoying them, and they’re wondering, ‘What is this?’’

Furthermore, he raised concerns about the demolition of existing structures, particularly for government-funded projects, including the construction of markets. ‘Ghana has had markets for 180 years,’ he explained, referencing Asafo, Adum, Kejetia, and Makola as examples of established trading centers. ‘We’ve already had markets for Ghana’s independence. Asafo Market is older than Ghana’s independence. Adum Market, Kejetia Market and Makola Market, they’re older than Ghana’s independence. We’ve already had markets,’ he asserted, adding that the demolition of buildings, including schools and banks, to facilitate these projects was contributing to public frustration.

He questioned the necessity of new markets when Ghana already possesses established trading centers, citing the efficiency of existing infrastructure. ‘Ghana has had markets for 180 years. Asafo Market is older than Ghana’s independence. Adum Market, Kejetia Market and Makola Market, they’re older than Ghana’s independence. We’ve already had markets,’ he repeated, emphasizing the growing discontent amongst voters and the potential political consequences for the NDC, particularly in the Ashanti Region, which has historically been a stronghold of the NPP.

The situation is being viewed as a significant turning point, with analysts suggesting the growing dissatisfaction could have political ramifications for the NDC, potentially shifting the balance of power within the region. Mr. Adom-Otchere concluded by stating, ‘People are seeing these things, and they are desperate for the NPP to return to power,’ reinforcing the narrative of a potentially transformative shift in the political landscape of the Ashanti Region.”

According to data from the Ashanti Region’s Electoral Commission, the number of registered NPP voters increased by 15% in the past year, suggesting a heightened level of political engagement and dissatisfaction amongst the electorate. The region’s historical significance within Ghana’s political landscape is further underscored, with a demonstrable history of NPP dominance.
