The Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council (AABTC) has issued a formal ultimatum to District Chief Executive (DCE) Linda Ahenkora, demanding an immediate apology, following accusations of unlawful interference into chieftaincy matters within the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Area of the Akyem Abuakwa District, Ghana. The Council, in a letter dated August 12, 2026, penned by the State Secretary, D.M. Ofori-Atta, highlights a dispute concerning the recognition and elevation of the Etweresohene, Ofosu Kwabi, to paramountcy status, a matter initiated by the State Council meeting on July 7, 2026. The letter details a previous letter from the DCE, accusing the Council of interfering with a customary dispute concerning the Etwereso chieftaincy, alleging that the DCE had mistakenly recognised and elevated Ofosu Kwabi to paramountcy. The AABTC contends that the Council has not appointed any individual as Regent for the Etwereso Stool, stating that the appointment was an unintentional oversight. The letter explicitly warns of potential escalation to the appropriate authorities if an apology is not forthcoming, emphasizing that the DCE’s actions constitute an encroachment on established chieftaincy processes. The core of the dispute centers on the DCE’s alleged actions of conferring paramountcy status to the Etweresohene, a practice deemed unlawful by the AABTC, which it maintains is contrary to constitutional and legal provisions. Specifically, the Council cites Article 270(2) of the 1992 Constitution, arguing that the power to bestow paramountcy status – and to withdraw it – is reserved for constitutionally mandated chieftaincy institutions, not Metropolitan, Municipal, or District Chief Executives. The AABTC maintains that the Etwereso Stool remains a sub-stool of the Benkum Division of the Ofori Panin Stool, and that the Okyenhene remains committed to peaceful resolution of the dispute, affirming his responsibility to facilitate the issue. The Council has stated that the DCE’s position on the Etwereso Stool, as documented in previous correspondence, remains unchanged. Furthermore, the AABTC has accused the DCE of exercising executive authority without sufficient caution, citing a prior, alleged difficulty with support from the NPP Ashanti regional elections. The Council stresses the importance of respecting customary traditions and established chieftaincy processes, asserting that the DCE’s actions are a violation of the established order and undermine the dignity of chieftaincy. The AABTC is demanding immediate cessation of any actions or deliberations that could be construed as an attempt to interfere with the Etwereso chieftaincy dispute. The letter concludes with a plea for the DCE to exercise caution and seek clarification from the Ofori Panin Fie before taking any further action, reinforcing the Council’s position on maintaining the integrity and continuity of the traditional system.” , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,
