Taybeh, West Bank – A small, predominantly Christian town nestled within the rugged hills of the West Bank, Taybeh has long been a haven for Palestinian Christians, a community steeped in centuries of tradition and a quiet resilience. However, in recent years, a palpable sense of anxiety has gripped the town, transforming from a familiar, if somewhat isolated, existence into a place perpetually shadowed by escalating settler attacks and military incursions. The narrative of Taybeh is increasingly one of vulnerability, a struggle to maintain its cultural identity and sense of security amidst a growing threat from Israeli expansion.

Since the mid-20th century, Taybeh has been a pivotal point in the Palestinian landscape, serving as a refuge for a community largely unaffected by the broader conflict. The town’s unique character, characterized by its historical significance as a Christian center and its deeply rooted traditions, has fostered a strong sense of community. However, this tranquility is now under severe strain. The recent influx of Israeli settlers, driven by a combination of land acquisition and perceived security concerns, has dramatically altered the town’s dynamics, triggering a rapid deterioration in safety and stability.

The core of the problem lies in a combination of factors. The initial settlement of the area began in 2018, marked by the establishment of several outposts, leading to increased surveillance and a heightened sense of threat. The subsequent years have witnessed a surge in attacks, escalating from sporadic incidents to coordinated, targeted raids. The most recent attack in March 2023, a brazen assault on the quarry, underscored the severity of the situation, forcing Roland Basir, the owner of the stone quarry, to abandon his business.

Roland Basir, a man burdened by the weight of his past, describes the situation as a slow-motion tragedy. ‘We’ve lost everything,’ he states, his voice heavy with despair. ‘The quarry, the factory, our home – all are under constant threat. The settlers are relentless, and they seem to be taking advantage of the town’s isolation.’ His words highlight the pervasive feeling of vulnerability that permeates Taybeh. The town’s strategic location, bordering the West Bank border, further exacerbates the situation, making it a frequent target for Israeli military patrols and surveillance.

The impact on the community is profound. Sandra Basir, a woman whose life has been irrevocably altered by the escalating violence, reflects the emotional toll. ‘My mother’s arm was broken by a settler during the olive harvest,’ she recounts, her voice laced with sorrow. ‘It’s a small incident, but it feels like a constant reminder of what we risk losing.’ The constant threat has led to a significant exodus of residents, with families abandoning their homes and livelihoods in search of safety.

The economic consequences are equally devastating. The decline in tourism, a vital source of revenue for Taybeh, has crippled the town’s economy. The closure of the hiking trail, a cherished local tradition, is a stark example of the impact on the town’s identity. The Mayor’s own vineyard, once a symbol of Taybeh’s prosperity, now sits behind a settler’s fence, representing a loss not only for the local economy but also for the town’s cultural heritage.

Local authorities, including the Palestinian Liaison Office and the police, have struggled to effectively respond to the escalating crisis. The army’s reluctance to provide sufficient security measures, combined with the opposition from powerful political figures within the Israeli government, has left the situation dangerously precarious. Israeli officials have acknowledged the problem, but have yet to commit to concrete action to curtail the settler activity. The military’s actions have been largely interpreted as selective enforcement, selectively targeting activists attempting to offer protection to the local community.

Despite the challenges, the Taybeh community remains remarkably resilient. Father Bashar Fawadleh, the town’s priest, speaks of a profound sense of loss and a determination to preserve the town’s traditions. ‘We are Palestinian Christians,’ he affirms, ‘and we have a history rooted in faith and community. We will not surrender our land, our heritage, or our hope.’ The town’s residents are attempting to organize and protect themselves, engaging in community defense efforts and seeking ways to resist the encroaching forces of settlement.

Al Jazeera has reached out to the Israeli authorities to obtain a comment regarding the situation, but has yet to receive a response. The situation is further complicated by the fact that the Israeli military, often operating under a veil of secrecy, has been accused of deliberately obstructing efforts to remove settlers, further intensifying the sense of isolation and vulnerability within Taybeh.

As the shadow of settlers deepens, the fate of Taybeh hangs in the balance. The story of this small West Bank community serves as a poignant reminder of the human cost of conflict and the enduring struggle for a just and secure future.
