Sustainability Skills and Careers Launchpad Africa (SSCLAfrica), an African-centred e-learning platform focused on green skills development, has been launched in Nairobi, Kenya, to equip the continent’s workforce for the emerging green economy. This initiative represents a significant step towards bolstering the skills needed for a sustainable future across Africa. Launched at the Green Works 4 Africa Forum, SSCLAfrica provides online learning opportunities for students, professionals, and organizations seeking to develop, upgrade, or broaden their sustainability skills. The platform’s core offerings encompass a diverse range of areas, including ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) principles, renewable energy, climate resilience and adaptation, sustainable finance, circular economy initiatives, green technology, carbon markets, sustainable supply chains, and future-of-work skills. The course is designed around African realities, industries, and case studies, aiming to make sustainability education more practical and directly relevant to professionals across the continent. As part of the launch, SSCLAfrica has introduced a free, three-hour course titled ‘The Green Skills Advantage.’
The course comprises two modules: one focusing on Africa’s green transition, workforce readiness, and the integration of ESG principles into sectors such as finance, procurement, human resources, operations, and supply chains. Head of Operations and Portfolio at Sustainability News Africa, Erica Bechaabagnaa Tengan, enthusiastically encouraged young people from diverse backgrounds to utilize the platform and develop green skills crucial for their careers. Nadya Ogwonyo, Lead for Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability and Learning (MEAL) at SSCLAfrica, highlighted that learners successfully completing the course assessments would receive certificates. She added that the course is self-paced, featuring recorded lectures, case studies, quizzes, and practical assignments, with no prior ESG or sustainability experience required. Natasha Ogwonyo, also a Social Asset Strategist at SSCLAfrica, emphasized the importance of educating young people on sustainability knowledge to enable them to meaningfully participate in discussions surrounding sustainability. Dr. Enoch Opare Mintah, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of SSCLAfrica, described the platform as a transformative initiative, highlighting its African-centred approach – emphasizing that the courses draw heavily on African examples, realities, and case studies, ensuring that learning is relevant, practical, and rooted in the continent’s own context. He asserted that the initiative extends beyond just training; it’s a crucial step towards developing human capital necessary to support a just transition to a green economy, create decent jobs, and promote sustainable livelihoods across Africa. Furthermore, the platform’s catalogue includes courses on Agenda 2063, renewable energy and transition, sustainable finance, circular economy, and future-of-work skills.
