Spokesperson for the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Aremeyaw Shaibu, has issued a crucial message to Christians and Muslims, urging restraint, patience, and forgiveness as Ghana grapples with escalating tensions stemming from a recent incident involving a pastor accused of making derogatory remarks about Prophet Muhammad. Speaking at a meeting between the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), the Police Management Board (POMAB), and religious leaders on Friday, August 14, Sheikh Aremeyaw emphasized the need to avoid actions that could undermine Ghana’s long-standing tradition of peaceful coexistence. He cautioned that allowing anger over religious provocation to escalate risks jeopardizing the country’s established framework of amicable relations.

He explained that peace, he stated, does not have a fixed timetable and that there is no moment when individuals will not need tranquility. Sheikh Aremeyaw acknowledged the deep sensitivity amongst Muslims to remarks considered offensive to Prophet Muhammad, explaining that Islam necessitates Muslims to hold all prophets in high esteem. He further stated that for Muslims, all prophets, without exception, are held as sacred beings, held in high esteem.

He noted that several prophets recognized by both Christianity and Islam are mentioned in the Holy Quran, describing this as a significant point of common ground between the two faiths. However, he urged Muslims who were offended by the alleged remarks to remain calm and refrain from retaliatory actions. He clarified that for all those affected, he called for restraint and patience. The National Chief Imam’s spokesperson also appealed to Christians who were angered by the subsequent treatment of the pastor to remain calm and allow the matter to be handled through the appropriate channels. He specifically urged cool heads to be employed when dealing with this situation.

The National Chief Imam’s appeal to Christians to remain calm and allow the matter to be handled through the appropriate channels underscores the importance of maintaining dialogue and the formal justice system. He underscored that neither community should take the law into its own hands, urging both sides to rely on dialogue and the formal justice system. Sheikh Aremeyaw stressed that religious leaders had an immediate opportunity to influence public attitudes through their sermons, particularly during the Friday prayer, highlighting the significance of these religious leaders’ contributions.

He described these virtues – blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God, and the prayer centered on peace – as demonstrated by Jesus and Prophet Muhammad and emphasized that consistent messages from religious leaders could help restore calm. He commended the IGP for bringing religious leaders together to address the tensions, stating that the police response and the decision to create a platform for dialogue were crucial steps. He further warned that Ghana’s interfaith harmony was a valuable national asset that must be deliberately protected. He cautioned that while the police had a responsibility to investigate alleged offenses and maintain public order, religious leaders also had a crucial role in influencing how their followers respond to provocative incidents. He urged Muslims offended by remarks about Prophet Muhammad to exercise restraint, while calling on Christians angered by the treatment of the pastor to remain calm. He said Ghana’s interfaith harmony was too valuable to be sacrificed to a cycle of provocation and retaliation, and urged both communities to draw on their religious traditions of peace, forgiveness, and compassion. IGP urges Christian, Muslim leaders to help defuse religious tensions.
