New Zealand has formally severed its ties with Oceania’s football governing body, following the withdrawal of support for FIFA president Gianni Infantino by three regional confederations – Europe’s UEFA, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), and the Concacaf (North and Central America and the Caribbean) – over his aborted plan to sell 20% of the World Cup’s commercial rights. This decision comes after a protracted period of disagreement and a significant breakdown in trust between FIFA and its member associations, particularly concerning the development of the Fifa Forward Enterprise Scheme (FFE).

Infantino’s loss of support from these confederations has prompted a series of individual member nations, including England, Wales, Norway, the Republic of Ireland, and Northern Ireland, to publicly reaffirm their non-support for his re-election bid. The Confederation of African Football (Caf) and South American governing body Conmebol have also affirmed their support for the 56-year-old’s continued leadership at the Fifa Congress in March.

The New Zealand Football Confederation (NZF) has formally stated its position, outlining a desire for an independent review of FIFA’s decisions and actions, citing concerns about the erosion of trust within the international football landscape. The NZF believes that these actions represent a significant challenge to the integrity of football administration and advocates for enhanced governance, accountability, and transparency. Specifically, the NZF views the decision as an opportunity to strengthen the influence of Fifa member associations in shaping the future of the global game.

The withdrawal of support from the FFE proposal, initiated after careful consideration, has further fueled the NZF’s call for an independent review. The NZF Chief Executive Andrew Pragnell emphasized that the organization seeks an independent review specifically to address the perceived lack of trust and division within FIFA, viewing it as a crucial step toward restoring confidence and fostering a more stable environment for the game. The OFC Executive Committee acknowledged Fifa’s decision, but refrained from declaring outright support for Infantino, stating that the OFC maintains its commitment to supporting the World Cup’s development under Fifa’s leadership.

Following the announcement, Wales became the first nation to officially withdraw support from Infantino, further highlighting the growing momentum behind the NZF’s call for a comprehensive review. The NZF has also been working to secure an independent review, which has been requested by other confederations, acknowledging the need to restore the trust that has been damaged by the situation.

The decision represents a considerable shift in the landscape of international football governance, signaling a rejection of FIFA’s perceived leadership and a renewed emphasis on strengthening the control and accountability of the global governing body. The situation underscores a broader trend of member associations challenging FIFA’s authority and advocating for greater transparency and stakeholder participation in the sport’s future management.
