The Ministry of Defence is officially welcoming Kenneth Gilbert Adjei as the new substantive Defence Minister, marking a significant shift in leadership within Ghana’s security apparatus following the recent passing of Dr Edward Omane Boamah.
Following a reassignment from the Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources, where he previously served as Deputy Defence Minister, Mr. Adjei was officially appointed by President John Dramani Mahama on Friday, August 7, 2026. This reshuffle represents a crucial return to the Defence Ministry’s core responsibilities since the tragic death of his predecessor, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, who perished in a military helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region on August 6, 2025, claiming the lives of seven others.
Mr. Adjei’s tenure begins amidst heightened security concerns within Ghana and the wider sub-region. Ghana continues to closely monitor instability in the Sahel region, cross-border crime activities, and maritime security issues along the Gulf of Guinea, elements that demand a strengthened and proactive defence strategy.
Prior to this appointment, Mr. Adjei held the position of Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources from January 2025 to December 2025. During his tenure, he spearheaded initiatives focused on addressing critical housing needs and improving water supply infrastructure across the nation. His responsibilities encompassed overseeing vital infrastructural projects, including the development of new housing schemes and the expansion of water distribution networks. The Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources is now under the direct oversight of the Defence Ministry.
Mr. Adjei’s background is rooted in a deep understanding of Ghana’s security landscape. He previously served as Deputy Defence Minister between 2015 and 2017, during President Mahama’s first administration, contributing significantly to the Ministry’s strategic planning and operational oversight.
President Mahama, in his recent ministerial reshuffle, sought to refocus the government’s attention on strengthening Ghana’s security architecture. This strategic realignment includes a considerable emphasis on bolstering the Defence Ministry’s capabilities and ensuring national security.
Mr. Adjei’s leadership will be pivotal in navigating these evolving security challenges, particularly as Ghana continues to be vigilant in the face of regional instability and potential threats.
His appointment signifies a commitment to revitalizing the Defence Ministry’s role and enhancing Ghana’s defense posture. The Ministry of Defence has announced a series of meetings and briefings to facilitate a smooth transition and ensure seamless collaboration within the security apparatus. Official statements indicate a renewed dedication to maintaining national security and projecting Ghana’s strength on the international stage.
The Ministry of Defence has emphasized the importance of establishing robust communication channels with key stakeholders, including military units, intelligence agencies, and law enforcement bodies, to effectively address emerging threats.
The government has also launched a comprehensive review of security protocols and strategies to ensure optimal preparedness and response capabilities.
Furthermore, Mr. Adjei’s tenure is expected to involve a thorough assessment of Ghana’s defense spending and resource allocation to maximize the effectiveness of the military’s operations.
This marks a critical juncture for Ghana’s security, with the Defence Minister now tasked with formulating a long-term strategy to safeguard the nation’s interests and promote stability within the region.
