The Ghana Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts has issued a firm directive, demanding the immediate removal of unauthorized structures encroaching upon Ghana’s forts and castles. Minister Dzifa Gomashie emphasized this as a critical priority, stressing the imminent threat to the country’s invaluable cultural heritage, a matter already escalating to alarming levels.

Her call comes amidst mounting concerns regarding the pressure exerted by illegal developments surrounding these historic sites. The Minister repeatedly highlighted that the issue isn’t simply about aesthetic concerns; it’s about the very survival of these monuments, which serve as tangible links to Ghana’s past.

Ms. Gomashie underscored the importance of a coordinated approach, stating that tackling this problem necessitates a collaborative effort involving traditional authorities, local communities, and relevant state agencies. She stressed that community engagement is key to garnering support for preservation efforts. “Often, we leave out the engagement with the community. And so they don’t see the importance of why our, for example, call for the demolition of illegal structures around the forts and castles,” she said, drawing a parallel to a visual representation – ‘Aluta’ – which translates to ‘the beginning’ – emphasizing the urgent need for immediate action.

The Minister’s statement reveals a significant shift in perspective, recognizing the historical and cultural significance of these sites as a foundational element of Ghana’s identity. She stated that the scale of encroachment is now deemed ‘alarming’ and requires immediate intervention.

According to a recent report by the Ministry, preliminary assessments indicate that a substantial area around several forts and castles is experiencing unauthorized construction. These structures, often built without proper planning or adherence to regulations, are directly disrupting the natural buffer zones crucial for protecting the monuments from erosion and damage. The Ministry has confirmed that the government is committed to implementing stricter measures to prevent further encroachment, including, according to a statement released this week, “exploring legal avenues to address the situation.”

The Ministry is proposing a multi-faceted strategy, including the implementation of robust monitoring systems and the strengthening of enforcement mechanisms. They are also advocating for increased community awareness campaigns to educate residents about the importance of preserving these historical assets. The initiative is framed as a vital step towards safeguarding Ghana’s cultural legacy for generations to come, and the Minister has repeatedly asserted that protecting Ghana’s heritage is non-negotiable.

Furthermore, the Minister clarified that the removal of these structures is not solely a governmental responsibility but necessitates a broader societal commitment. She emphasized that the preservation of Ghana’s forts and castles is a shared responsibility, and that effective collaboration among all stakeholders is paramount to achieving this goal. A spokesperson for the Ministry stated that they are working with archaeologists and historians to conduct a thorough assessment of the affected areas and develop a detailed remediation plan. The Ministry has also scheduled a public forum next week to discuss the situation and solicit input from the public.

This incident represents a significant challenge to the Ministry’s long-term strategic plan, emphasizing the urgent need for proactive measures to safeguard Ghana’s cultural heritage from potential degradation.
