An Accra Circuit Court has delivered a 15-year prison sentence to Emmanuel Akpatsa, a 32-year-old driver, for attempting to rob his former employer, Mr Callistus Mahama, residing at Okpoi Gonno, off the Spintex Road in Accra. The court’s decision follows a trial that concluded with the defendant’s conviction, a result of the prosecution’s investigation led by Inspector Priscilla Avorgah.

The prosecution presented a compelling case, primarily relying on the testimony of four witnesses, including Gabriel Djanfosu, a 29-year-old houseboy and driver, who was present with three others at the residence on May 24, 2025, at approximately 0100 hours. According to the prosecution’s narrative, Akpatsa, posing as a robber, entered Mr. Mahama’s house armed with a kitchen knife. The prosecution alleges that Akpatsa demanded a motorbike, a silver Honda motorbike, registration number M-25-GR 5034, from Mr. Mahama, instructing him to release it to him.

The prosecution’s evidence centered on Akpatsa’s attempted robbery, detailing his initial entry and subsequent actions. The prosecution asserted that Akpatsa, upon being confronted by Mr. Djanfosu, who was the complainant, attempted to pull the knife and demand the motorbike.

The trial revealed that the prosecution’s key witness, Gabriel Djanfosu, provided details of the events leading up to the incident. He stated that Akpatsa entered the residence at approximately 0100 hours, pulling the knife and demanding the motorbike. The prosecution highlighted the fact that the security guard and a Police officer responded to the call, and that Akpatsa was subsequently detained and the knife was retrieved.

Following the incident, investigations revealed that Akpatsa had previously worked as a driver for Mr. Mahama at the residence. The prosecution reported that Akpatsa left his job on January 22, 2025, receiving a compensation of GH¢10,000. The prosecution further stated that on May 23, 2025, Akpatsa returned to Accra from his hometown, Kpando, at approximately 2100 hours, and proceeded to Martey-Tsuru, where he obtained a kitchen knife from Richard Ampiah.

The prosecution detailed a complex sequence of events, starting with Akpatsa scaling the wall to Mr. Mahama’s house. According to the prosecution, Akpatsa then seized the knife and demanded the motorbike, exhibiting a level of aggression and intimidation. Mr. Djanfosu, the complainant, reportedly stepped outside to urinate before retrieving a cutlass and calling for assistance, a maneuver that, according to the prosecution, facilitated Akpatsa’s capture.

The security guard and a Police officer assisted in apprehending Akpatsa at Manet, where he was subsequently charged with unlawful entry and attempt to commit robbery.

In his statement, Akpatsa admitted to the offence, which the prosecution has now formalized with a 15-year sentence. The prosecution’s investigation concluded that Akpatsa had previously worked as a driver at Mr. Mahama’s residence, and that he was subsequently charged with the crime. The court has ordered the prosecution to investigate the case further and to determine whether any other individuals were involved in this incident. The case is expected to continue with legal proceedings.

The prosecution’s case suggests a calculated attempt to gain access to a valuable motorbike, highlighting a potentially escalating situation that culminated in a violent confrontation.
