Bishop Eddy Aryee, General Overseer of the Intercessors Chapel International, has sharply criticized the police for utilizing religious scriptures during recent encounters, advocating for a prioritization of law enforcement over religious interpretations. Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Aryee asserted that the police’s primary duty should be to uphold Ghana’s laws, rather than engage in religious discourse or preach scripture. He contends that the police’s role should be to enforce the law without considering the religious or tribal background of individuals involved in disputes. This stance follows a meeting between Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno and police officials, the Police Management Board (POMAB), and religious leaders on August 14, 2026. The meeting stemmed from escalating religious tensions following incidents including alleged offensive comments about the Prophet Muhammad and a reported assault of a handcuffed Christian cleric. The IGP had requested that Christian and Muslim leaders utilize their influence to de-escalate tensions and protect Ghana’s reputation for peaceful coexistence. However, Aryee argued that the police must rely solely on Ghanaian law in handling such matters, rejecting the use of scripture as a basis for resolving disputes. He stated that Muslims do not subscribe to the Bible and Christians do not subscribe to the Quran, making it inappropriate for the police to use either scripture as the foundation for resolving disputes. The police, according to Aryee, should focus on investigating offenses and prosecuting individuals who violate the law, rather than employing religious teachings as a basis for judgment. He further emphasized that religious leaders should be responsible for interpreting and preaching their respective scriptures, while the police should concentrate on investigation and prosecution. The clergy should be the ones quoting scripture, thereby allowing the police to arrest individuals who break the law, irrespective of their religious affiliation. Bishop Aryee stressed that individuals involved in alleged offenses should be treated equally regardless of their religious background, emphasizing that the rule of law must be applied universally, irrespective of religious affiliation. Furthermore, he urged the police to leave religious matters to the clergy, stating that the security service’s role should be solely focused on maintaining law and order. The Interior Minister was asked to investigate how civilians were able to gain access to an arrested individual and allegedly assault him, questioning the possibility of the incident occurring while the individual was in custody. The Interior Minister was also asked to investigate how civilians were able to get into contact with an arrested individual to the extent of slapping the man. Bishop Aryee highlighted that the Christian teaching of coexistence should guide relations between the two faiths, but insisted that enforcement of Ghana’s laws must remain the responsibility of the police. Ghana has reported 8,900 hectares of forest reserves to be lost to illegal mining. The government has also launched a ‘Peace for Peace’ initiative to unite men at the center of religious controversy, highlighting the importance of dialogue and reconciliation.
