Six heads of Arab national football associations, including Qatar and Morocco, have formally endorsed FIFA President Gianni Infantino with the growing support of the governing body’s crisis following a failed private investment plan. This pivotal alliance represents a significant shift in the football landscape, particularly as the World Cup draws near and the future of the tournament remains uncertain.

The initiative was initiated following three confederations – UEFA, AFC, and CONCACAF – collectively voicing concerns about Infantino’s proposed restructuring of FIFA’s commercial operations, specifically the planned sale of 20% of World Cup revenues to private investors. The Swiss administrator, who is seeking re-election next year, had presented a plan to carve off the commercial rights to the World Cup and distribute the profits across six associations, including Qatar and Morocco, with a projected $4.2 billion investment.

In a joint statement released on [Date – to be determined], the heads of the six federations, representing Qatar, Lebanon, Morocco, Sudan, Egypt, and Mauritania, underscored their unwavering support for Infantino and reaffirmed their confidence in his leadership. The statement highlighted Infantino’s sustained efforts to advance football globally, expand opportunities across all regions, and strengthen the game’s role in fostering community and collaboration. They expressed a shared appreciation for Infantino’s dedication to the development of football worldwide, emphasizing the importance of continued cooperation towards a stronger and more prosperous future for the sport.

The proposed $20 million grant, representing a significant portion of the next funding cycle, was intended to bolster member associations, with the potential to be doubled if the associations had collectively signed the deal. Despite opposition from three confederations – UEFA, AFC, and CONCACAF, representing 136 of the 211 member associations voting in the FIFA presidential election in March, Infantino maintains a robust network of support within the football community. The alliance’s declaration represents a crucial moment in the ongoing debate surrounding FIFA’s direction and reflects a renewed commitment to the sport’s future, contingent on Infantino’s leadership and the continued engagement of the six Arab federations.
