The Ghana Police Service has successfully thwarted a meticulously planned robbery attack on GCB Bank, Ecobank, and Zenith Bank in Labone, Accra, resulting in the deaths of two suspects and the apprehension of one. The incident, which unfolded around 10:45 a.m. on Thursday, August 13, 2026, began after intelligence reports indicated a coordinated effort by a criminal syndicate to target the three major financial institutions in the area.
The police responded swiftly to the location, deploying a specialized response team immediately to the area. Surveillance revealed two vehicles parked closely to the banks, suspected of being involved in the planned operation. One of the vehicles, according to authorities, sped off after the officers spotted it, indicating a deliberate attempt to evade capture.
The police team immediately pursued the vehicle, and one suspect, identified as Augustine Okechuku Maazi, was apprehended. However, another occupant of the vehicle attempted to escape, firing at the police officers. A shootout ensued, resulting in the death of two suspects. The officers subsequently recovered two vehicles – a Toyota Highlander with registration number GS-1434-18 and a Hyundai Tucson with registration number GS 7915-17 – from the scene. A blow pistol was also recovered, suggesting the perpetrators were attempting to inflict maximum damage.
The police stated that two suspects were killed, and the bodies have been submitted to the morgue for preservation, identification, and autopsy to determine the cause of death. The authorities expressed gratitude for the swift response of the police team and acknowledged the public’s crucial role in providing credible information regarding criminal activities.
Detective Inspector General, Raphael Nkrumah, commended the team’s diligence and bravery, stating, ‘This operation is a testament to the dedication and professionalism of our officers. We are thankful for the public’s vigilance, which allowed us to intercept the criminals before they could inflict significant harm.’
Maazi is currently in police custody and assisting with investigations, and his identity has been confirmed as the primary suspect. The authorities have stated that the investigation is ongoing, and they are working to identify and apprehend any additional individuals involved in the robbery.
The GCB, Ecobank, and Zenith Bank have released a statement confirming the incident and expressing their concern for the safety of their customers. They have assured the public that all necessary measures are being taken to ensure the security of their assets and operations.
