On Sunday, approximately a dozen Palestinian households in a village in the occupied West Bank were informed by Israeli military forces to leave their properties following a military operation to remove Israeli settlers. This unfolding situation has sparked widespread condemnation and raises serious concerns about the escalating human rights crisis in the region.

The settlers, who have been besieged in three homes in the area since Sunday, have cut off power and water supplies, intensifying the already dire conditions for the residents. Israeli authorities confirmed that the military aims are to ‘protect the residents’ and that some of the vacated Palestinian houses have been repurposed as barracks, a move that has been met with considerable resistance from the local community.

Qusra Mayor, Abdel Azim Wadi, addressed the BBC, stating that his village had been declared a closed military zone and that Israeli forces were utilizing some of the vacated Palestinian houses as barracks. The Israeli military spokesperson, David Mencer, asserted that the intent was to ‘protect the residents,’ but emphasized that the government would investigate and arrest those responsible for the actions. Mencer further stated that the Israeli army is acting against it, and that they are investigating and arresting those responsible and prosecuting them.

The Israeli military has stated that they had ‘dismantled two illegal outposts’ and detained one Israeli and confiscated equipment on the outskirts of the Qusra and Jalud areas near Nablus. Settlements are illegal under international law, and the Israeli government has consistently promoted their expansion as a key driver of the conflict.

This incident represents a significant escalation in the ongoing Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories. The settlement expansion under the current Israeli government has led to a dramatic rise in settler violence, driven by the settlers’ desire to drive Palestinians off their land. The Abu Ridi and Hassan families, among others, have been informed that their homes will be vacated on Thursday, after being told they would move into the third house.

Elsewhere, the residents of 11 other houses have also been told to leave by the army. One resident, Qaher Odeh, described more than 20 soldiers entering his house in the morning, and then leaving, only to return later, instructing him and his brother that they were in a military post and requiring them to leave. Odeh added that the entire area was sealed off, and that people were being forced out of their homes.

Videos shared overnight into Thursday showed a dozen Israeli security vehicles – including a bulldozer – moving towards the Palestinian village. Later, footage revealed a long line of Israeli security forces on the road to the village. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated that they had ‘dismantled two illegal outposts’. The IDF added that it had detained one Israeli and confiscated equipment on the outskirts of the Qusra and Jalud areas near Nablus.

Palestinian security camera video shared with the BBC showed confrontations between Israeli soldiers and border police and a large crowd of settlers. The security forces used tear gas and stun grenades. In other footage, the Israeli forces appear to have confiscated the canopy under which the settlers were sheltering, while leaving their other equipment.

The exact reasons behind the settlers’ actions remain unclear. Historically, settlers have forced Palestinians out of their homes and seized their properties, a pattern that continues to be observed in the West Bank.

The case is the latest to draw attention to the relative impunity of settlers and the Israeli forces’ struggles to deal with rising settler violence.

The situation in Qusra’s mayor had earlier stated that local residents had seen ‘a clear and sustained pattern of targeting Qusra.’ Last month, a newly completed mosque was set on fire with graffiti in Hebrew sprayed nearby, a symbol of escalating violence.

This incident is part of a larger trend of displacement and violence in the West Bank, with approximately 76 Palestinians – including 18 children – killed this year by Israeli forces or settlers. Three Israelis – including one civilian – were killed in confrontations with Palestinians and in an alleged ramming attack by a Palestinian in the West Bank.

Israel’s Ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, dismissed the idea that settlements were an obstacle to peace, stating that they would remain and continue to grow as his country had biblical, historic and legal rights to the land.
