The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) Greater Accra Regional Office is intensifying its efforts to significantly reduce the recurring accidents currently plaguing the Ofankor Barrier area, a region known for its high volume of vehicular traffic and challenging road conditions. The announcement comes amidst a grim toll – a recent incident has resulted in the loss of eleven lives and seventeen others critically injured, highlighting the urgent need for proactive intervention by the authorities. Speaking at the scene of the latest accident, which remains a deeply concerning event, Senior Planning Manager Felix Owusu detailed the NRSA’s strategy to combat this persistent problem.
Mr. Owusu explained that the Authority has been diligently monitoring the area for some time, receiving consistent reports of frequent collisions and near-misses. ‘We’ve been informed repeatedly that there are consistently occurring accidents at this particular location,’ he stated, emphasizing the severity of the situation. This isn’t a new challenge; the NRSA’s assessment underscores a growing concern amongst road safety experts. The Authority has actively engaged with various stakeholders, including local authorities, traffic management units, and engineering experts, to conduct a thorough investigation into the root causes of these accidents. This collaborative approach is crucial, as the investigation will aim to determine whether the issues stem from driver behavior, human error, or underlying infrastructural deficiencies.
‘We will work with the relevant stakeholders to identify whether the problem is driver behavior, human error, or an engineering issue, and we will make sure the appropriate measures are put in place to address it,’ Mr. Owusu affirmed. The NRSA’s strategy encompasses a multi-faceted approach, including enhanced traffic monitoring systems, stricter enforcement of traffic regulations, and the implementation of improved signage and road markings. Specifically, the Authority is exploring the deployment of advanced technology, such as real-time traffic data analysis, to identify potential hazards and proactively manage traffic flow. They are also working with the Ministry of Transport to review and update road design standards to better accommodate the increased traffic volume. ‘We are committed to creating a safer environment for all road users,’ Mr. Owusu asserted.
The focus will shift towards promoting safer driving practices, particularly among young drivers. The NRSA is planning targeted awareness campaigns emphasizing the importance of defensive driving, adhering to speed limits, and maintaining a safe following distance. Furthermore, the Authority is reviewing speed limits in the area, with a particular emphasis on reducing speed during peak hours.
