The Member of Parliament for the Nkwanta Constituency in the Oti Region, Geoffrey Kini, has underscored the critical importance of robust feeding practices and comprehensive poultry management for the sustained success of the Nkoko Nkitinkiti initiative within Nkwanta South. Kini highlighted that the initiative, a key component of the government’s Feed Ghana Programme, represents a significant shift beyond traditional job creation, strategically aiming to reduce Ghana’s dependence on imported frozen chicken and eggs, a resource-intensive undertaking.
He explained that the Nkoko Nkitinkiti initiative, operating under the auspices of the Ministry of Agriculture’s Feed Ghana Programme, is fundamentally focused on promoting food sovereignty and shared prosperity, aligning with national goals of bolstering local agricultural productivity.
Kini expressed concern regarding the substantial annual expenditure of approximately $350 million to $400 million on imported poultry products, characterizing this as a substantial drain on the country’s foreign exchange reserves and a missed opportunity for the revitalization of the local poultry sector. He stated that the current state of the sector, historically a vital contributor to rural livelihoods and nutritional well-being, is currently facing significant challenges.
He emphasized that the implementation of effective feeding and poultry management strategies would directly benefit 200 households through the distribution of 20,000 broilers and layers, effectively bolstering the local poultry industry. The MP stressed the need for farmers and entrepreneurs to treat the birds as valuable business assets, adhering to the guidance provided by agricultural extension officers and employing sound poultry management techniques.
Furthermore, he announced the deployment of agricultural extension officers across communities to offer technical support and continuous monitoring of the beneficiaries’ progress. The launch ceremony, held at Brewaniase and Nkwanta, marked the commencement of the distribution of the birds to beneficiaries, demonstrating a commitment to improving household nutrition and generating sustainable income streams.
Several beneficiaries, speaking to Adom News, expressed gratitude for the government’s intervention and pledged to diligently cultivate and manage the birds to enhance the availability and affordability of poultry products in Nkwanta South. They affirmed that the initiative represents a vital step towards bolstering the region’s agricultural landscape and achieving greater self-sufficiency in poultry production. The MCE, Joseph Awal Antwi, commended the government’s strategic investment in the initiative, emphasizing its deliberate selection of beneficiaries – a process conducted without political considerations – ensuring equitable distribution.
The Ministry of Agriculture reported that the initial launch of the initiative has already resulted in a surge in the ginger price, presenting a potential market opportunity for local producers. The Cedis market experienced a 3.1% depreciation in July 2026, with year-to-date gains reaching a significant level, demonstrating the potential for this initiative to create economic opportunities within the Nkwanta South region. This initiative underscores the government’s dedication to fostering agricultural development and securing the nation’s food security.”
