Ghana has successfully navigated a potential South African repatriation initiative, averting a controversial move that could have significantly impacted its citizens. Following a surge in xenophobic attacks in the country, Ghana’s government opted to independently evacuate its nationals, a decision hailed as a critical safeguard against potential repercussions from South Africa. The South African government, facing substantial financial burdens related to the repatriation exercise, has initiated formal requests for reimbursement from several African nations, including Nigeria, Malawi, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique – a request Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs disclosed. The Department of Home Affairs, the primary agency responsible for managing this process, has spent nearly $18 million (£13.6 million) on the repatriation endeavor, demanding reimbursement from these nations. This represents a significant financial commitment, exceeding the country’s allocated budget for the exercise.

The exercise, which involved over 1,600 repatriated Ghanaians, has been largely funded by the Ghanaian government, with substantial support from private businesses. Each returned citizen received a reintegration allowance and transport fare upon arrival at the Accra International Airport, alongside other crucial relief items. The government’s swift and decisive action has been widely praised by Ghanaians, who emphasize that it shielded citizens and saved lives amidst the ongoing unrest. The South African government initially offered to provide support, but declined the offer, stating that Ghana’s responsibility to its citizens remains paramount.

Sources indicate that South African authorities had proposed to support Ghana’s repatriation exercise, but this offer was rejected, with Ghana choosing to bear the full financial responsibility. The financial implications of South Africa’s repatriation efforts are now being scrutinized by Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs, with detailed figures outlined during a briefing on Wednesday, August 12th. South African officials stated that a substantial portion of the expenditure was allocated to bus rentals, alongside temporary repatriation facilities, staff overtime, and other operational costs. Home Affairs Director-General Tommy Makhode emphasized that although South Africa provided initial assistance, the overall financial burden ultimately fell on Ghana.

However, the situation is complicated by a tragic accident involving a Tipper Truck and Sprinter bus at the Ofankor barrier. Emergency response efforts are underway to clear the scene, and authorities are working diligently to ensure the safety of the area. The government has also issued a warning about the potential for further incidents following the incident, urging caution among travelers and residents.

Preliminary reports suggest that the accident may have caused significant damage to the area, raising concerns about potential additional risks and hazards.”
