The Allied Health Council (AHC) has initiated a series of closures impacting six health facilities within the Ho Zonal Area, following a comprehensive compliance exercise deemed insufficient to safeguard patient safety and guarantee quality of care. The Council’s actions signal a significant escalation in scrutiny of allied health operations in the region, prompting investigations into potential violations of established regulatory guidelines. The closures, announced on [Date of Announcement – Placeholder], represent a targeted response to identified shortcomings in operational procedures and adherence to essential standards.

The affected facilities include Grace Diagnostic Center, Eagles Lancet and Imaging Center, RD Access Laboratories, Elysa Diagnostic, Professional Eye Care, and Bestlab Diagnostic. The Council’s assessment, conducted over the past several weeks, uncovered a range of concerns, primarily centered around the lack of documented standard operating procedures (SOPs) for many of the facilities. These SOPs, crucial for ensuring consistent and safe practices, are vital for minimizing risks and maintaining the integrity of healthcare delivery.

According to Professor Issahaku Shirazu, Registrar of the Allied Health Professions Council, the absence of these procedures poses a significant threat to patient safety. “Many of these facilities operate without standard operating procedures, and this lack of documented protocols is a serious offense to practice without an SOP, which we believe does not augur well with patient safety,” he stated. Professor Shirazu emphasized the Council’s determination to ensure compliance and improve patient outcomes.

The Council’s investigation revealed a pattern of difficulty in explaining the procedures followed by some facilities or the equipment they utilize. “We cannot guarantee patient safety because we don’t know what or which equipment you’re using,” Shirazu explained. The Council is now actively engaging affected healthcare professionals, encouraging them to revise and implement the required protocols to mitigate these risks. This includes a detailed review of existing procedures, training, and quality assurance measures.

The compliance exercise is part of the Allied Health Council’s broader strategy to bolster regulation and ensure healthcare providers uphold the necessary standards for safe and quality service delivery. The Council intends to conduct further investigations and potential penalties for facilities that fail to address these identified deficiencies. The initial closures are expected to impact a range of services offered within the Ho Zonal Area, potentially affecting patient access to specialized healthcare treatments.

A detailed report outlining the findings of the compliance exercise and the Council’s plan of action is expected to be published within the coming weeks. The Council’s decision to shut down these facilities underscores its commitment to prioritizing patient safety and maintaining the integrity of the allied health sector. The Council has stated that they will work collaboratively with healthcare providers to implement corrective measures and prevent future occurrences of these issues. The closure of these facilities will undoubtedly trigger a reassessment of operational protocols and resource allocation within the region.

This situation represents a notable shift in the regulatory landscape for allied health in Ghana, highlighting the Council’s dedication to safeguarding patient well-being and upholding the standards of medical practice. The Council will be closely monitoring the progress of implemented corrective actions and will continue to advocate for improvements in regulatory oversight.

Data indicates that the six facilities are involved in a diverse range of services, including diagnostics, therapeutic treatments, and rehabilitation. The Council’s focus remains on ensuring adequate oversight and accountability to protect the public health.
