Minister of State for Government Communications Felix Kwakye Ofosu has vehemently rejected claims by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) that democracy is under attack, arguing that recent events demonstrate a continued commitment to freedom of expression and peaceful protest. The NPP, during a recent demonstration, accused the government of using state investigative and security agencies to target opposition members through arbitrary arrests, detention, and harassment, alleging a systematic suppression of dissent.

Speaking in an interview on Adom TV’s Badwam, Mr. Kwakye Ofosu stated that the privileges enjoyed by the NPP during the demonstration prove their claims are false. He asserted that the demonstration’s very nature – the right to present concerns directly to the Presidency – exemplifies the government’s respect for the right to peaceful protest. He recalled instances of previous NPP demonstrations, including one involving 39 young people arrested for disturbing public order, stating that these events were ‘normal’ and that the protesters were subjected to inconvenience and discomfort.

Mr. Ofosu further distinguished between legitimate criticism of government and threats against public officials. He emphasized that the issue isn’t simply about criticizing the government; rather, it’s about constructive dialogue and addressing hardship through channels like radio and social media. However, he countered that individuals can publicly express threats against the President, posing a serious concern, questioning where such actions would be tolerated and allowed.

He defended President John Mahama’s record on political criticism, highlighting his tolerance of his critics. He cited journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni, who had previously been a strong critic of Mahama, as an example, noting that Awuni had been granted access to the Jubilee House to meet with the President. Furthermore, Mr. Ofosu referenced the involvement of several CSOs, including Sulemana Ibrahim, in meetings with the President, reinforcing the notion of a collaborative relationship.

The debate surrounding the NPP’s demonstration underscores a broader discussion about the balance between freedom of expression and the potential for abuse of power. The government’s response has been characterized by a reiteration of the President’s commitment to tolerating criticism, while the NPP continues to highlight perceived restrictions on political discourse, fueling a complex and ongoing discussion about the health of democratic institutions within Ghana.
