The situation in the West Bank continues to deteriorate, with escalating Israeli settler activity intensifying in several villages, raising serious concerns amongst international observers and Palestinian communities. Since Sunday, Israeli security forces have withdrawn from the Jewish settlement of Qusra near Nablus, following reports of clashes with settlers. Approximately a dozen settlers remain at the site, prompting heightened tensions and anxieties.

Following the initial reporting from Palestinian homeowners, soldiers were filmed praying with the settlers on Wednesday. This incident follows a previous, reported withdrawal from the Jewish settlement of Abu Ridi, where a group of settlers tore down a wall, effectively isolating seven residents and preventing them from reaching the other inhabitants. The Abu Ridi family reported that their water and power supplies were cut off, and their food stocks dwindled, highlighting a critical situation for the families.

The escalating conflict has been fueled by a growing number of incidents, including reports of settlers attempting to block the road outside the Abu Ridi family’s home on Sunday evening. This action, coupled with the ongoing pressure on Palestinian residents, has resulted in a sense of isolation and vulnerability for those living in Area B, a portion of the West Bank under Palestinian administrative control and Israeli security control.

Posting on Facebook, Qusay Abu Ridi stated, “We are completely isolated. We are living in our own home, on our own land, and we are asking for nothing more than the right to live safely and with dignity.”

The situation has been further complicated by a direct communication with Haaretz, a leading Israeli newspaper, by Israeli journalists. The reporters reported that Israeli soldiers refused to help them reach the Palestinian properties, resulting in a two-hour blockage of the area. They were instructed to believe the area was a military zone, yet the soldiers continued to operate.

Furthermore, a Palestinian ambulance was finally allowed to reach the families, delivering food and taking one child away for medical treatment. This incident occurred at approximately the same time as a statement condemning the establishment of a new outpost by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). The IDF stated that entering and seizing Palestinian homes was “illegal, reprehensible, and unacceptable activity.” The statement condemned the actions of the security personnel involved, who were documented on the site several days ago.

The IDF also condemned the use of tear gas and stun grenades during a confrontation between Israeli soldiers and border police and a large crowd of settlers. The security forces used this tactic to confiscate the canopy under which the settlers were sheltering, leaving their other equipment behind. The incident is ongoing, with the IDF emphasizing that disciplinary action will be taken against those involved, including documenting the security personnel at the site several days ago.

The Palestinian village mayor, Abdel Azim Wadi, confirmed that local residents had witnessed a pattern of targeting Qusra, adding that a recently completed mosque was set on fire with graffiti in Hebrew. This incident was part of a larger pattern of violence in the West Bank, including the destruction of a newly completed mosque in Tal. The Israeli forces subsequently evacuated the tent and are working to evacuate the civilians who were staying there.

The UN’s Deputy Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Ramiz Alakbarov, reported that 76 Palestinians – including 18 children – have been killed in the West Bank this year, by Israeli forces or settlers. The Nablus Governorate has been particularly hard hit, with three Israelis killed in confrontations with Palestinians and in an alleged ramming attack by a Palestinian in the West Bank.

According to the UN’s figures, 127 Palestinian communities in the West Bank have experienced full or partial displacement, including 47 that have been entirely displaced, affecting more than 6,390 Palestinians, the UN says. The situation is expected to continue to deteriorate, with the IDF emphasizing that the settlements remain and continue to grow as their country has biblical, historic and legal rights to the land.

Experts are warning that the situation could escalate into a full-scale conflict, and the international community is urging restraint to avoid further violence.
