The Coalition of Unpaid Nurses and Midwives of Ghana has issued a heartfelt commendation to Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh for his decisive intervention in resolving a protracted and significant issue concerning salary arrears affecting over 13,500 health professionals across the nation. This significant event marks a pivotal moment in the government’s commitment to safeguarding the well-being of Ghana’s healthcare workforce, a commitment that has been repeatedly underscored by President Stephen Kwadwo Takyia, the coalition’s leading representative, during a formal meeting with the Minister’s office on October 26, 2023. The meeting, held at the Ministry of Health’s headquarters, was a testament to the collaborative spirit vital to maintaining the integrity of Ghana’s healthcare system.
More than 99 per cent of the affected health professionals have now received their salaries, a result of sustained engagement between the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Finance, initiated on October 1st, 2023. This protracted negotiation process, initially characterized by significant delays and uncertainty, culminated in a mutually agreed resolution, spearheaded by Minister Akandoh’s proactive approach. Mr. Akandoh explained that the Ministry, instead of unilaterally withdrawing appointments, strategically opted to retain the employment and salary arrangements of these professionals, utilizing the Ministry of Finance to secure the necessary funding. Following the securing of financial clearance, which was officially announced on November 1st, 2023, the Human Resource Directorate has been directed to expedite action on the outstanding cases, with a focus on ensuring timely processing of appointment letters and the implementation of the newly recruited health professionals’ mechanization. The Minister emphasized the commencement of recruitment for 16,000 health professionals by 2026, with a crucial initial allocation of 8,000 to be secured before the commencement of recruitment, thereby preventing a recurrence of the current salary arrears. Mr. Takyia stressed the importance of maintaining patient-centered care, advocating for a renewed emphasis on the vital role of health professionals in delivering quality healthcare to the nation’s populace.
