The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) in the Upper East Region of Burkina Faso is actively bolstering preparedness measures in anticipation of potential flooding following the anticipated spillage of the Bagre Dam. This significant event, posing a risk to residents in vulnerable communities, has prompted urgent action from NADMO, in collaboration with key stakeholders, to secure temporary shelters for those potentially displaced by the event.
In an interview with JoyNews’ The Pulse, Rebecca Akolgo, NADMO Director, emphasized the organization’s commitment to mitigating the potential impact of the spillage. She explained that the organisation has successfully secured temporary structures within vulnerable communities to serve as safe spaces for individuals facing potential displacement. NADMO’s efforts are particularly focused on educating residents and farmers along the White Volta River.
“NADMO, in collaboration with key stakeholders within these vulnerable communities, has been able to secure temporary structures that will be utilized as temporary shelters for people who may be affected by possible flooding,” Ms. Akolgo stated. She added that NADMO has also launched community sensitization and public education campaigns, specifically targeting farmers and residents living along the White Volta, urging immediate evacuation to higher ground levels.
According to NADMO, the Burkina Faso authorities responsible for the Bagre Dam, Sonabel, have reported a current water level of 233.08, with 234 identified as the level anticipated for the spillage. NADMO remains on site, closely monitoring developments as the water level approaches the critical threshold for potential flooding. Ms. Akolgo underscored the crucial role of coordination with other relevant agencies to strengthen preparedness and ensure a coordinated response should flooding occur.
She stressed that NADMO operates as part of a broader network, highlighting the importance of collaboration with other agencies to enhance preparedness and ensure an effective response in the event of flooding. NADMO strongly urged residents in flood-prone areas, particularly those along the White Volta River, to take the warnings seriously and comply with evacuation directives when necessary. The situation demands swift action and vigilance to protect lives and livelihoods within the affected communities.
