Ghanaian journalism has long been inextricably linked with political discourse, acting as a crucial watchdog and facilitator of public accountability. However, the boundaries between reporting and participation have increasingly blurred, leading to a notable shift in the landscape of Ghanaian politics. For years, journalists have occupied a unique position, often questioning politicians, scrutinising government policies, and providing a platform for public debate. Yet, what happens when a journalist decides to step out of the media sphere and actively engage in the political arena itself? This transition has ignited a complex question: Can a journalist, who has spent years holding politicians accountable, successfully transition into the very role they’ve spent their careers observing and analyzing? The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Code of Ethics emphasizes independence and objectivity, a cornerstone of journalistic integrity. But this principle is increasingly challenged as prominent media personalities have increasingly ventured into political positions, from television production to parliamentary representation. This article explores ten such individuals, examining their journeys and the enduring question of whether their experience as journalists can translate into successful political careers. Their paths, while varied, illustrate a significant trend: the potential for journalists to become key voices in policy and public affairs, yet also highlight the considerable challenges and potential pitfalls inherent in this evolution.

Starting with Fritz Baffour, a television producer and communications consultant, he transitioned from journalism to prominent political involvement. His career spanned across television production, working for prominent figures like Rawlings and the NDC, and later serving as Information Minister, demonstrating a direct link between journalistic skills and political influence. He later represented the Ablekuma South Constituency in Parliament from 2009 to 2017 and served as Minister for Information during the Mills administration. His move underscores how communication skills acquired during journalism can be invaluable in navigating the complex terrain of political engagement. Then came Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, a journalist who initially transitioned from Joy FM to parliamentary representation. He later became a prominent figure in the NPP, representing the Ablekuma South Constituency in 2009 and serving as Minister for Information during the Mills administration, where he played a crucial role in government communication and defense.

Kojo Frimpong, a former television personality and sports presenter, followed a similar trajectory, becoming a prominent figure in Ghanaian media. He worked at Radio Gold, and later served as Deputy Minister for Information under the John Dramani Mahama administration, demonstrating a strong ability to communicate effectively in the political sphere. His involvement with the Ghana Tourism Authority further solidified his political career.

Another example is Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, a former television personality and sports presenter, who ventured into political activity, having previously worked at TV Africa. He won the Talk Show Host of the Year award in 2011, further demonstrating a commitment to public engagement.

Alhassan Bashir, known as A.B.A. Fuseini, is another noteworthy example. He spent 25 years in newsrooms, working with various media outlets including Joy FM and Metro TV, before entering politics. He later served as the Member of Parliament for Tamale North on the NDC ticket, demonstrating a career built on extensive reporting and commentary.

Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, though trained as a civil engineer, transitioned into a successful career as a sports broadcaster before entering politics.

Hassan Suhuyini, a former journalist and member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), also made the transition. He spent 25 years in newsrooms, working with various media outlets including Radio Gold, and later served as Press Secretary and Spokesperson to President John Kufuor, and later became General Secretary of the NPP. His political ambitions began in 2012, when he contested the NPP parliamentary primary for the Bortianor-Ngleshie-Amanfrom constituency, but lost.

Despite not winning a parliamentary seat, he later entered public administration, serving as Director of the Ghana Tourism Authority, a role that ended with the change of government in 2017.

Gideon Aryeequ, a former television personality and sports presenter, sought to translate his media career into parliamentary politics.

Gideon’s ambition ultimately fell short in 2024, when he was unable to unseat the incumbent, Latif Dan.

Jefferson Kwamina Sackey, a journalist, media consultant, filmmaker, and public relations strategist, began his career at TV Africa, and developed a deep understanding of media landscapes.

His political ambition began earlier, when he contested the NDC parliamentary primary for the Weija Constituency in 2008, but lost.

He later attempted to move from presidential communications to Parliament, but ultimately failed to secure a seat.

The movement from the microphone to partisan politics continues.
