The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has initiated a significant operation in the Kyebi area of the Eastern Region, strategically focused on combating illegal mining activities along the Birim River and its extensive catchment areas. This action represents a crucial component of national efforts aimed at safeguarding Ghana’s vital water resources and mitigating the detrimental impact of mining on the environment. NAIMOS, a key governmental agency responsible for regulating and controlling illegal mining activities across the country, has declared this operation a priority, recognizing the escalating threat to water quality and ecosystem health. The operation’s primary objective is to directly address the substantial pollution and degradation currently plaguing the Birim River, which has been significantly impacted by illicit mining operations. The operation’s scope extends beyond simply removing illegal sites; it involves a comprehensive and sustained effort to restore the river’s natural flow and improve its overall health. According to a statement released by NAIMOS, the operation began with the targeted clearing of several illegal mining sites along sections of the Birim River, initiating a continuous monitoring effort that continues across the region. The taskforce, composed of experienced law enforcement and environmental specialists, has already completed several initial assessments and has expanded its scope to encompass additional areas identified as hotspots for illegal mining. The primary focus of the operation is to significantly curtail the flow of illegal mining activities, including the extraction and utilization of water resources within and surrounding the river. The operation is particularly vital given the severe pollution and degradation experienced by the Birim River, which has been severely impacted by decades of unregulated mining practices. The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), a key water provider in the region, has reported a significant decline in water production due to the river’s ongoing contamination. NAIMOS acknowledges this challenge and has stated a commitment to continued monitoring, emphasizing that sustained clearance and proactive measures are essential to allow the river to gradually recover. The Secretariat has issued a clear warning to mining operations within the river corridor, urging immediate cessation of all illegal activities. Furthermore, the operation is being coordinated with a wide range of stakeholders, including security agencies, regulatory bodies, and traditional authorities, to ensure a coordinated approach to protecting the Birim River’s integrity. NAIMOS is also actively working with neighboring communities to foster a collaborative effort to safeguard this critical resource. The operation’s long-term goal is to establish a sustainable system of water management, ensuring reliable water supply for communities reliant on the Birim River. The Secretariat has expressed deep concern over the continued degradation of the Birim River, highlighting the urgent need for robust enforcement and environmental protection measures. The Kyebi area, the focal point of this operation, is a significant area of concern, and NAIMOS emphasizes that the success of the initiative is contingent on sustained community engagement and a commitment to responsible mining practices. The operation is being viewed as a critical step toward restoring the Birim River to a condition that supports both ecological health and human well-being.” ,] ,
