Libyan emergency services are currently engaged in a desperate battle to contain a massive fire at the Zawiya refinery, a significant oil plant located west of Tripoli, Libya. The incident, which occurred on Monday evening, marks the third such attack in two days, raising concerns about operational disruptions and security instability within the country. The National Oil Corporation (NOC) confirmed that a direct hit – approximately 4.5 million liters of fuel – was inflicted upon the tank, triggering a rapidly escalating fire that subsequently collapsed, causing significant structural damage.

The fire, which quickly spread and consumed a considerable portion of the refinery’s infrastructure, has resulted in substantial smoke inhalation among those affected. According to a statement released by Libya’s Ambulance and Emergency Service, a total of approximately 120,000 barrels per day of output has been temporarily suspended as a precautionary measure. The NOC expressed its condemnation of similar attacks in recent days targeting other vital facilities, including a naphtha reservoir and a water desalination plant, further highlighting a pattern of escalating violence.

This incident is part of a broader context of instability in Libya, which has since fractured into two distinct power centers following the ousting of former leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. Since his death, rival factions – one based in the east, backed by military commander Khalifa Haftar, and another in the west, under Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeibah, vying for control – have intensified their competition for political and military dominance. The NOC has emphasized the need for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding this attack, noting that the situation demands immediate attention to prevent further escalation.

Furthermore, Colonel Gaddafi seized power in 1969 and ruled autocratically for four decades, establishing a deeply entrenched regime that has been characterized by a lack of political pluralism and a struggle for succession. The subsequent power struggles have resulted in a fragmented political landscape with ongoing tensions and challenges to established governance structures. The situation remains fluid, with ongoing reports indicating the involvement of armed groups and a heightened risk of further unrest. Libya’s political landscape is currently dominated by the ongoing struggle for leadership, with the NOC’s role as a key player in the country’s economy and security is being challenged by a complex web of competing factions.

This incident underscores the continued instability in Libya, a nation grappling with a protracted civil war and a legacy of political division. The NOC has stated that it is committed to restoring stability and ensuring the safety of its employees and the surrounding communities, while acknowledging the complex challenges facing Libya’s future.
