The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has issued a directive instructing drivers to immediately reverse fare increases that have been implemented without their explicit approval, sparking a significant public outcry and raising concerns about regulatory oversight within the transportation sector. This directive follows a wave of complaints from commuters across the country alleging that drivers are charging significantly higher fares despite a previously agreed-upon suspension of a 30% fare increase. The issue originated on Tuesday, August 11, when Deputy Public Relations Officer Samuel Amoah stated in an interview with JoyNews’ ‘The Pulse’ that the GPRTU’s actions are a direct response to the mounting complaints, which he described as a ‘follow-up’ process initiated after receiving multiple calls from commuters concerned about unauthorized fare hikes. Mr. Amoah explained that the GPRTU’s initial contact was made following the report of drivers increasing fares in areas like Madina, prompting the union to deploy personnel to investigate and engage local transport leaders. He asserted that the union initiated a meeting with leaders to ensure compliance, stating that this agreement stipulates that drivers must hold onto the agreed fares until the stipulated period. The GPRTU further emphasized that the union operates through branches across Ghana, with branch executives responsible for addressing complaints involving drivers under their jurisdiction. Mr. Amoah clarified that if a branch confirms that its drivers are exceeding the agreement, the union can sanction the drivers or order them to revert to the previously established fares. Specifically, the GPRTU cited a recent complaint involving drivers operating on the Ashaiman route as an example of enforcement efforts, detailing that the union deployed its men there to ensure compliance. He acknowledged that enforcement remains a considerable challenge, as not all commercial drivers are members of the GPRTU or other recognized transport unions. The GPRTU assures that it will continue monitoring transport terminals and routes to identify drivers who violate the agreement and ensure unauthorized fare increases are reversed. However, the situation underscores a broader concern regarding the potential for regulatory gaps within the transport sector, particularly concerning the enforcement of agreements between transport unions and commercial drivers. The Health Ministry has recently denied allegations of a shortage of antiviral medication, assuring the public that individuals living with HIV will continue to have access to vital healthcare services. Furthermore, the GPRTU has reported a recent incident involving a driver allegedly beaten to death over a misunderstanding at Gomoa Achiase, highlighting the potential for escalation and the challenges inherent in enforcing regulations within a complex transportation ecosystem. The GPRTU’s directive underscores a potential conflict between the union’s role as a regulatory body and the realities of the market, where drivers may not always be formally affiliated with the union, presenting a challenge to maintaining consistent standards and ensuring fair practices.” ], , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,
