A new study has unearthed a significant and often-underestimated consequence of internal migration – the profound emotional challenges faced by husbands in rural communities like Wa West, Upper West Region. The research, spearheaded by Professor Elijah Yendaw of the University for Business and Integrated Development Studies (UBIDS), meticulously examines the psychological ramifications of wives’ departures, painting a picture of considerable loneliness and distress for those left behind. The study, focusing specifically on 12 married men whose wives had migrated to other areas of Ghana, provides a vital, albeit qualitative, glimpse into the complexities of this familial shift.

The core of the investigation centered on assessing the emotional impacts and coping mechanisms employed by these husbands, a task accomplished through a phenomenological approach. This means the researchers didn’t simply ask questions; they immersed themselves in the lived experiences of the individuals involved, employing in-depth, semi-structured interviews. The interviews, conducted over the first half of 2022, encompassed a diverse group of 12 married men, all of whom had been left behind by their wives’ migration to areas such as Accra, Kumasi, and beyond.

The research, presented as a policy brief at the 6th Research and Development Conference of the University for Business and Integrated Development Studies (UBIDS), highlights the often-overlooked family costs associated with internal migration. While economic considerations are frequently discussed, the study emphasizes the significant psychological toll on husbands, particularly those who have experienced the loss of a significant partner and the disruption of their daily lives.

The findings, meticulously analyzed and contextualized within the broader economic landscape of Ghana, reveal a consistent pattern of distress. Husbands reported feelings of isolation, loneliness, and a profound sense of abandonment. The study identified that the absence of a familiar, daily companion significantly impacted their emotional well-being. Specifically, the interviews revealed a heightened vulnerability to anxiety, depression, and a general sense of dissatisfaction with their lives. Professor Yendaw, the lead author of the study, emphasized the significance of this research, stating, ‘This study underscores the critical need to address the emotional support systems for husbands in rural communities facing migration. The loss of a spouse can have a devastating impact on a man’s sense of purpose and stability.’

The research’s methodology utilized a qualitative approach, focusing on in-depth interviews rather than statistical analysis. This allowed the researchers to gain a nuanced understanding of the subjective experiences of the husbands – their emotional landscape, the specific challenges they faced, and the coping strategies they employed. The study’s focus on Meteu, Buli, Oloteng, and Bulingin is particularly noteworthy, representing a geographically diverse area experiencing significant migration patterns within the Wa West District. The researchers believe that understanding the specific emotional dynamics within this community is crucial for developing targeted support programs.

Specifically, the study uncovered that the loss of a wife’s emotional support and companionship profoundly affected husbands’ ability to maintain a sense of normalcy and stability. The research also noted that the absence of a partner can lead to feelings of vulnerability and a diminished sense of self-worth. Furthermore, the study highlighted the difficulty in maintaining social connections within the community – the husbands often felt isolated and disconnected from the social fabric of their lives. The researchers found that the lack of regular interaction with family and friends exacerbated feelings of loneliness and isolation.

The study’s implications extend beyond the immediate emotional well-being of the husbands. It serves as a crucial reminder of the multifaceted consequences of migration, prompting a re-evaluation of the support systems needed to adequately address the challenges faced by rural communities during periods of transition. The research suggests that increased investment in family support services, including counseling and social activities, could significantly mitigate the negative impacts on husbands in Wa West. The study underscores the importance of considering the holistic impact of migration – not just the economic considerations, but the profound psychological consequences for individuals and families.

Looking ahead, the University for Business and Integrated Development Studies (UBIDS) plans to disseminate the findings through policy briefs and educational programs aimed at promoting responsible migration policies and supporting the well-being of rural communities. The research team stresses that this is a vital step toward fostering a more humane and sustainable approach to migration, ensuring that the transition for individuals and communities is managed with sensitivity and empathy.
