The Director-General of the Department of Urban Roads, James Oduro Amoo-Gottfied, has announced a significant milestone in the Suame Interchange construction project: the completion of approximately 15 kilometers of inner roads within the Suame and surrounding areas. This strategic move is intended to facilitate traffic diversion ahead of the anticipated commencement of the interchange’s initial phase. The announcement came during a crucial stakeholders’ engagement with traders, highlighting the vital importance of this infrastructure development for easing congestion and providing alternative routes.

According to Amoo-Gottfied, while some of these inner roads are still in the process of being fully completed, the progress made thus far is critical. ‘We are committed to ensuring a smooth and efficient project,’ he stated, emphasizing that the completion of these roads will significantly alleviate traffic burdens in the area. The 15-kilometer stretch represents a substantial undertaking, demonstrating the Department’s dedication to optimizing transportation infrastructure within the region. This phased approach is designed to minimize disruption and ensure the project remains on schedule.

The directive to vacate affected areas by those working within the right-of-way is a key element of the plan. Ing. Amoo-Gottfied explicitly addressed the concerns of traders and other individuals occupying areas adjacent to the road’s boundaries, stating that the Assembly is actively working on their compensation. He further emphasized the need for voluntary relocation by those who are not directly involved in the road construction itself. The Assembly is exploring potential alternative spaces for businesses to continue operating after the necessary road clearing.

Several traders expressed their willingness to cooperate with the project, stating, ‘We already know that the place where we are operating belongs to the government. If it has become necessary for us to leave for a development project to take place, we will,’ – a sentiment echoed by several other traders. They are advocating for a proactive approach that prioritizes their continued business operations and facilitates seamless collaboration with the project’s advancement. The Director-General stressed that the collaborative effort between government and stakeholders is paramount to the project’s successful completion, stressing the critical role of cooperation in ensuring timely execution.

The project’s impact extends beyond simply easing traffic congestion; it’s a vital component of the broader urban development strategy. Traffic management is a significant concern for the region, and this infrastructure upgrade represents a crucial step in addressing it. The Department of Urban Roads has stated that the completion of these inner roads is a key factor in achieving the project’s overall objectives. Further updates on the project’s progress and compensation arrangements will be communicated as they become available, with the aim of maintaining transparency and addressing community concerns.

Traffic volume in the Suame area is currently estimated to be around 300 vehicles daily, and this figure is expected to increase significantly as construction progresses. The 15-kilometer stretch of inner roads is expected to contribute to a reduction in congestion by facilitating a smoother flow of traffic, ultimately enhancing the overall commuting experience for residents and businesses in the area. The full extent of the project’s impact will be monitored and assessed as the construction phase continues, with a focus on minimizing any potential disruptions to local communities.
