The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Bosome Freho District, Charles Appiah Kubi, has announced a remarkable achievement – the successful removal of approximately 90% of persons with disabilities (PWDs) from the streets of the district through the dedicated PWD Fund. This significant milestone is being hailed as a major step forward in improving the living conditions and economic independence of the community.
According to Mr. Kubi, the Assembly has strategically utilized the PWDs fund to tackle a longstanding issue – the prevalence of PWDs resorting to street begging as a means of survival. He revealed that this situation, which had previously been a significant challenge, is now gradually diminishing.
The Social Welfare Department of the Bosome Freho District Assembly distributed the third tranche of PWD start-up kits to 29 beneficiaries, a testament to the Assembly’s commitment to enhancing their well-being. Mr. Kubi stated, ‘These kits have been instrumental in eradicating street begging among PWDs in Bosome Freho. Previously, many individuals were not engaged in any economic activity due to their challenging circumstances, leaving them with no viable option but to seek refuge on the streets.’
He emphasized the Assembly’s unwavering dedication to improving the living conditions of PWDs and equipping them with the necessary resources to achieve economic independence. The DCE underscored that the initiative is not simply about providing assistance; it’s about empowering individuals to become self-sufficient.
The Director of the Social Welfare Department, Frank Konadu Asare, explained that the increased allocation of funds has enabled the department to support an expanded number of beneficiaries. He stated, ‘Previously, the department could only support about 15 PWDs per year, but the increased allocation has allowed us to support at least 30 beneficiaries on three consecutive occasions this year, with an anticipated further round planned for the end of the year.’
The DCE also highlighted a crucial initiative – the School for the Deaf in Jamasi, where the Department has provided mobility training and support to several PWDs. He expressed satisfaction with the initiative, noting that it has helped to improve their educational opportunities. Furthermore, the Secretary of the Federation of Persons with Disabilities in the Bosome Freho District, Nana Boadu, commended the Assembly’s proactive prioritization of the welfare of PWDs, emphasizing the recent support package that includes refrigerators, deep freezers, spraying machines, wheelchairs, and fufu-making machines – items that will enable beneficiaries to establish businesses and improve their livelihoods.
He stated, ‘Today, our members have received items such as refrigerators, deep freezers, spraying machines, wheelchairs, and fufu-making machines. These items will enable them to engage in productive activities and improve their lives.’ Mr. Kubi expressed hope that similar interventions would continue until street begging among PWDs is completely eradicated in the district, ensuring a more inclusive and prosperous community for all.
