Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader of Ghana, delivered a poignant statement on Monday, August 10, 2026, expressing a significant sense of loss following the appointment of former Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga as Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs. Afenyo-Markin, known for his characteristic amiable and easygoing nature, described Mr. Ayariga as an ‘affable, easygoing character’ whose approach to disagreements fostered a productive and often humorous relationship with his peers. This sentiment underscores a deep appreciation for Mr. Ayariga’s ability to navigate complex political landscapes with minimal friction. Mr. Ayariga’s recent departure from his position as Majority Leader, following a nomination as Minister, was met with a palpable sense of bewilderment among those within the parliamentary arena. He was subsequently replaced by James Agalca, a transition that, according to Afenyo-Markin, ‘was a little surprising.’ Mr. Ayariga’s recent departure marked a significant shift in the dynamics of the parliamentary landscape, prompting a reassessment of the relationship between the two leaders. The leader stated, ‘I miss him. He has his strengths. He has things that I like about him. You know, he’s an affable, easygoing character.’ He emphasized that Mr. Ayariga’s tendency to avoid holding grudges and his capacity to anticipate and counter opposing viewpoints were particularly valued attributes. Mr. Afenyo-Markin further highlighted that Mr. Ayariga’s straightforward, unpretentious style, characterized by his avoidance of embellishment and emotional outbursts, was a significant component of his appeal. He recounted a specific instance where Mr. Ayariga addressed an issue directly rather than escalating disagreements, a behavior Mr. Afenyo-Markin deemed crucial for maintaining a stable parliamentary environment. The sentiment expressed was that Mr. Ayariga, having a strong sense of his own boundaries, would not tolerate being held to account or subjected to unnecessary scrutiny. The departure of Mr. Ayariga, according to Afenyo-Markin, ‘will not hide his feelings. At least I could easily predict him on what he likes and what he doesn’t like. And he doesn’t hold grudges. That is one strength I would miss,’ adding that the absence of this characteristic would be keenly felt. Mr. Afenyo-Markin acknowledged that the parliamentary relationship between the two politicians had, at times, been marked by unexpected surprises. He described instances where they had seemingly “spring surprises on each other,” a phenomenon he acknowledged was a common occurrence in political maneuvering. The leader underscored the importance of maintaining a strategic partnership, acknowledging that ‘there were times that he would surprise me. There were times that I also spring surprises on him. No politician likes surprises. But in the end, you are leading a side. You have a party interest to defend.’ Mr. Afenyo-Markin expressed a desire to maintain a positive working relationship with Mr. Ayariga, stating, ‘I wish him well in his new portfolio.’ The sentiment underscores a degree of respect and a recognition of Mr. Ayariga’s significant contributions to the parliamentary process. Afenyo-Markin’s remarks reflect a poignant appreciation for the mentor figure and a subtle acknowledgment of a dynamic relationship that had undoubtedly shaped the political landscape. The leader’s words suggest a desire for continued collaboration and a recognition of the value of experience and leadership, even as he acknowledges a certain degree of apprehension regarding the shift in the political landscape.” , ] ,] }
