The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), under the leadership of Chief Executive Officer Sammy Gyamfi, is undertaking a comprehensive and strategic initiative to bolster traceability and accountability within the country’s gold sector. This multifaceted effort centers around the rigorous profiling of all licensed buyers of gold, representing a significant shift in how the industry operates and the Board’s role within it. Gyamfi, in a recent statement, emphasized that this isn’t merely a compliance exercise; it represents a fundamental commitment to strengthening oversight and ensuring the proper accounting for gold transactions across Ghana’s entire supply chain.

GoldBod’s objective is to identify the origins of gold purchased through licensed channels, creating a clearer and more robust picture of gold flows throughout the nation. According to Gyamfi, the profiling process is crucial for several key reasons. Firstly, it allows the Board to pinpoint the sources of gold – a critical step in combating illicit activities and ensuring ethical sourcing.

He explained that the profiling currently involves examining all individuals and entities holding licenses to purchase gold. This detailed analysis is designed to establish a verifiable chain of custody, enabling the Board to better understand where gold enters the formal market.

The recent implementation of these profiling measures has yielded remarkable results. Ghana has seen a substantial increase in gold refining activity, with 7.1 metric tonnes of gold purchased by GoldBod currently being processed in Ghana. This shift represents a significant economic benefit, allowing the country to retain refining fees previously held by entities like the United Arab Emirates. Gyamfi underscored this point, stating, ‘This refining capacity, coupled with Ghana’s growing refining capabilities, positions us to play a more substantial role in the international gold market.’

Furthermore, the profiling process is actively contributing to a deeper understanding of gold’s entry points into the formal system. Gyamfi highlighted that the Board is establishing a geographical map of gold origins, a vital component of this strategy. The LBMA accreditation secured by Gold Coast Refinery serves as a pivotal development, demonstrating Ghana’s commitment to participation in this increasingly complex international market.

In his Twitter Spaces commentary on August 9th, Gyamfi reiterated the Board’s dedication to tracing gold’s journey. He asserted, ‘We are profiling all persons with a licence to buy gold in Ghana, and it is helping us know where all the gold buys are coming from.’ This proactive approach is a cornerstone of GoldBod’s strategy to enhance transparency and combat illicit activities within the gold sector.

This initiative underscores the GoldBod’s commitment to bolstering Ghana’s financial integrity and safeguarding its gold resources. The Board’s efforts are expected to have a lasting impact on the industry’s traceability and accountability, contributing significantly to the long-term sustainability of Ghana’s gold sector.”

This profiling initiative is a pivotal step in strengthening Ghana’s regulatory framework and ensuring the responsible management of its vital natural resource. The Board’s efforts represent a strategic investment in transparency and economic stability – a commitment that reflects a national focus on safeguarding the country’s prosperity.
