On February 8th, 2023, officers discovered the body of Sylvia Phillips, 89, in a chest freezer within the living room of Christopher Phillips’s home in Porthcawl, Bridgend, county. The discovery by officers triggered a welfare check request from her GP, which was subsequently denied by Phillips, leading to a police investigation. Sylvia Phillips, a 60-year-old woman, had died in March 2023, leaving behind a complex and unsettling situation involving her pension and benefits. The investigation revealed a pattern of deception and concealment, culminating in a lengthy prison sentence.

Christopher Phillips was arrested following the discovery of the body, and the subsequent investigation revealed a disturbing history of his relationship with his mother. He had repeatedly expressed a desire to avoid letting her go, claiming he wanted more time, according to his own testimony. His actions escalated to the purchase of a chest freezer from AO.com on March 10th, placing it in the dining room of his home. The freezer remained in the residence until police arrived to conduct a welfare check, which was prompted by the GP’s concerns.

The investigation uncovered a series of deliberate attempts to conceal his mother’s death. Phillips had been adopted by Sylvia at the age of two and was described as “exceptionally close” to her, acting as her sole caregiver. He continued to claim her pension and benefits, including housing benefits and winter fuel allowances, which were to cease upon her death. The court heard that he had been receiving substantial state pension payments totaling £78,190.92, a figure that would have ceased if the death had been reported. He had been her primary carer since 2008, and the court was informed that he resigned from his job in late 2022 when her health declined.

The investigation revealed a concerning pattern of behavior. Phillips had been repeatedly denied access to her medical records by his son, who stated he would not come to the surgery. Officers observed that Phillips was visibly trembling and fidgeting when they entered the house, and he ran upstairs and spoke to a girlfriend on the phone, claiming the police were going to arrest him. The pathologist was unable to determine a cause of death, but there were no suspicious circumstances.

During the trial, Phillips admitted three offenses: failing to properly bury his mother, continuing to claim her pension and benefits, and concealing the death of her. He described talking to her as if she was still alive, sitting next to her, and engaging in television programs. The court heard that he was described as a ‘vulnerable individual’ and that he had created a false narrative about her passing and attempted to manipulate medical professionals and the police.

The prosecution argued that Phillips deliberately concealed his mother’s death and took steps to give the impression that she was still alive, demonstrating a lack of acceptance about her passing and attempting to create a narrative of her survival. Judge Lloyd-Clarke emphasized that Phillips had deliberately concealed the death and provided the impression that she was still alive, representing a significant breach of trust and a deliberate attempt to mislead authorities.

Phillips sobbed in the dock, with the defense arguing that he had told police that he didn’t want to let her go. The defense asserted that he showed a lack of acceptance about her passing and had attempted to manipulate medical professionals and the police. The sentencing judge ordered that the confiscation proceedings would follow.

The prosecution stated that Phillips received a total of £78,190.92 in state pension, pensions credit, attendance allowance, winter fuel payments, cost-of-living payments, and housing benefit payments, which would have ceased had the death been reported. The court acknowledged that Phillips had been her primary carer since 2008, and the prosecution noted that he had resigned from his job in late 2022 when her health declined. The court noted that the pair were described as somewhat isolated.
