The transport company, VIP JEOUN, has reported a series of incidents involving armed robbery attacks targeting two VIP JEOUN passenger coaches on the Accra–Kumasi and Kumasi–Sunyani Highways, resulting in five individuals sustaining gunshot injuries. The incidents occurred within a two-hour timeframe, beginning at approximately 11:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 30th, between Apedwa Junction, Nkronso, Akooko, and Akyem Asafo in the Eastern Region, and at approximately 1:00 a.m. on Friday, July 31st, at Potrikrom on the Kumasi–Sunyani Highway. According to a statement released by VIP JEOUN, the first attack, originating from the Eastern Region, was a coordinated assault by armed robbers that initially blocked the highway, trapping three passenger coaches before the robbers launched a sustained attack. The vehicle carrying the driver, his mate, and three passengers was subsequently subjected to heavy gunfire, leaving the driver, his mate, and three passengers with gunshot wounds. The driver, his mate, and three passengers were immediately transported to a hospital for immediate medical attention, with the driver subsequently referred to the 37 Military Hospital for further medical evaluation and treatment. Police responded to a distress call from VIP JEOUN, engaging the robbers in a fierce gun battle, ultimately forcing them to retreat and restore traffic flow. Barely two hours later, a separate incident occurred at Potrikrom, where another VIP JEOUN coach was attacked, resulting in damage to its windshield. The attackers fired at the vehicle, damaging its windscreen, but an armed security escort returned fire, prompting the robbers to flee before they could rob passengers or cause further injuries. A police patrol team subsequently arrived on the scene to provide security and security measures were taken to ensure the safety of passengers and crew. In response to these incidents, VIP JEOUN reaffirmed its commitment to passenger safety, emphasizing its dedication to ensuring a hassle-free transportation experience. The company stated that it would continue to collaborate with the Ghana Police Service and other security agencies to enhance security along its routes and address the ongoing concerns surrounding safety and security within the transportation sector. Furthermore, a significant event occurred just outside of Parliament, with two passengers killed and ten injured in a crash on Cape Coast–Takoradi Highway, a situation that has understandably sparked public concern and scrutiny. The incident, which occurred on July 28th, is being investigated by the police.”
