A devastating road traffic accident occurred at Dompoase near Komenda on the Cape Coast-Takoradi highway on Friday evening, resulting in two fatalities and eight injuries. The incident, which occurred around 6:55 p.m., has triggered a thorough investigation by authorities.
Initial reports indicate that a Toyota Hiace vehicle, bearing registration number AS 6145-24, was involved in a collision. One of the deceased, identified as a man trapped in the vehicle, succumbed to injuries sustained during the crash. The rescue team, responding to a distress call, arrived at the scene at 7:10 p.m. and quickly established a scene.
According to rescue personnel, a single person was found deceased at the scene, and another victim, trapped within the mangled remains of the Toyota Hiace, was extricated by paramedics. Sadly, the second victim was pronounced dead shortly after, bringing the total death toll to two individuals. The Komenda Fire Station was immediately dispatched to the location to assist with the rescue operation.
The accident involved a group of ten people travelling in the Toyota Hiace vehicle, according to a statement released by the Central Regional Public Relations Officer, Divisional Officer Grade II (DO II) Abdul Wasiu Hudu. He confirmed that eight occupants sustained injuries, with three critically injured.
These injuries ranged from minor cuts and abrasions to more serious trauma, necessitating immediate medical attention. The affected individuals were immediately transported to the Elmina Polyclinic for treatment and stabilization.
Witnesses reported an unidentified vehicle attempting to overtake another vehicle traveling from Takoradi towards Cape Coast. The Toyota Hiace, travelling from Cape Coast towards Takoradi, reportedly veered off its lane and crashed into a broken-down truck with registration number GN 2491-14. This collision resulted in a significant impact, trapping one occupant inside the commercial vehicle until fire officers arrived to carry out the rescue operation.
Fire officials successfully rescued the trapped individual, and the incident has now been officially classified as a serious accident. The exact circumstances surrounding the collision are still under investigation.
