The newly appointed Regent of Dagbon, Kampakuya Naa Yakubu II, has delivered a powerful statement of intent, emphasizing the kingdom’s unwavering commitment to peace and the preservation of its rotational chieftaincy succession arrangement. His address, delivered on Friday, July 31st at the Gbewaa Palace, solidified his pledge to uphold the legacy of his late father, a monarch renowned for his dedication to unity and stability. The regent emphasized the importance of safeguarding the kingdom’s hard-won peace following the passing of His Royal Majesty, Ndan Yaa Naa Abukari II, a figure widely regarded for his skillful leadership and commitment to the well-being of Dagbon.

‘My father was a builder,’ he declared, drawing a direct parallel to the kingdom’s history of progress and resilience. He further underscored that the rotational chieftaincy succession, a cornerstone of Dagbon’s governance, is not merely an arrangement but a vital expression of wisdom, reflecting a belief that lasting peace is paramount to the kingdom’s long-term prosperity. The regent stressed that the rotational arrangement, established decades ago, remains sacrosanct, a testament to the wisdom of those who recognized the value of unity over partisan advantage. He explicitly stated that the rotational succession, established in the past, will continue to be upheld.

He detailed a comprehensive plan for the transition period, assuring the people of Dagbon that the process will be conducted transparently and in accordance with tradition, with the emphasis on upholding the existing peace agreement. The regent cautioned against any attempts to exploit the transition period for political gain, emphasizing the need to prioritize the interests of Dagbon over any perceived advantage of any individual gate. He reiterated his commitment to the development agenda, including the construction of the new palace, implementation of the Dagbon Ten-Year Development Plan, the establishment of the University for Development Studies (UDS) Yendi Campus, and ongoing agricultural and energy partnerships – a substantial investment expected to bolster the kingdom’s economic future. The regency will oversee the affairs of Dagbon until a new Yaa Naa is enskinned, a process that will be conducted with utmost transparency and respect for established customs.

The ceremony was attended by dignitaries, including President John Dramani Mahama, former Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, ministers of state, members of Parliament, and traditional rulers. The regent’s role is to oversee the governance of Dagbon until a new Yaa Naa is enskinned, effectively continuing the tradition of rotational succession. The sentiment of the regent underscores a deep-seated desire to preserve the kingdom’s heritage and its peaceful trajectory, reinforcing the importance of the legacy established by his father.
