The Ghana Prisons Service has formally joined a coordinated security operation to support security arrangements during the enskinment of the Regent of Dagbon at the Gbewaa Palace in Yendi on Friday, July 31st. This significant event marks the customary installation of the regent, who will oversee the affairs of the Dagbon Kingdom, pending the completion of the final funeral rites for the late Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II and the enskinment of a substantive Yaa Naa. The operation, spearheaded by the Yendi local prison, represents a vital component of a broader national effort to ensure a peaceful and orderly ceremony orchestrated by the Dagbon Traditional Council. The event, attracting President John Mahama, Ministers of State, Members of Parliament, heads of security agencies, traditional rulers, elders, and numerous dignitaries, underscores the cultural and national importance of this milestone. The Ghana Prisons Service has deployed 79 personnel, led by acting officer-in-charge CSP Sofo Abdul-Aziz, to assist in maintaining security throughout the proceedings. The Northern Regional Commander of Prisons, DDP Obed Kofi Acqyaye, also actively monitored the operation, offering his congratulations and acknowledging the professionalism and dedication of the deployed officers. The ceremony concluded peacefully, reflecting a collaborative effort among the security agencies. The Ghana Prisons Service emphasized its commitment to supporting national security, safeguarding public order, and fostering harmony through constructive engagement with traditional authorities – promoting peace, unity, and stability within the region. It is worth noting that a local tricycle rider has been sentenced to seven years in prison for defiling a minor girl, highlighting the sensitivity of the event and the need for heightened security measures. This incident underscores the importance of robust security protocols and vigilance, particularly during significant cultural events like the enskinment. The involvement of the Prisons Service is a strategic step in reinforcing the government’s commitment to maintaining stability and order, ensuring the continuity of vital community functions and safeguarding the integrity of national traditions.

This operation underscores the critical role of law enforcement and security agencies in supporting national events, particularly those with deep historical and cultural significance. The Ghana Prisons Service’s contribution is a demonstrable commitment to maintaining public order and security, safeguarding the well-being of the community, and working collaboratively with traditional authorities to promote peace and unity. The event, while politically charged, reflects a broader national effort to ensure the continuity of traditions and the stability of the Dagbon Kingdom, a cultural institution deeply rooted in Ghanaian history and heritage. Further investigations are underway to fully understand the nature of the juvenile defilement and to implement appropriate measures to prevent future occurrences. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for continued vigilance and proactive measures to protect the safety and security of all citizens.

This deployment represents a significant investment in the security of the region and a commitment to upholding the rule of law. The Ghana Prisons Service’s proactive involvement demonstrates a willingness to work alongside traditional authorities, ensuring that any event, regardless of its cultural significance, is conducted safely and peacefully. The government has repeatedly emphasized the importance of maintaining stability and order, and this deployment reflects a dedication to upholding these principles.

The event highlights a broader trend of increased security measures implemented to address concerns surrounding potential disruptions and ensure the smooth execution of important cultural ceremonies. The Ghana Prisons Service’s participation underscores its dedication to supporting national security, and its involvement in this operation demonstrates a proactive approach to safeguarding public order and maintaining the stability of the region.
