The Ghana Boundary Commission (GhBC), established to strengthen boundary governance, has completed a five-day operational assessment and stakeholder engagement program within the Oti Region, encompassing sections of the Ghana/Togo International Boundary. This assessment, initiated on July 27th, 2026, and concluding on August 1st, 2026, represents a significant component of the Commission’s broader strategy to enhance border security and foster deeper integration between Ghana and Togo. The assessment was conducted across the Kadjebi District, Nkwanta South Municipality, and Nkwanta North District, strategically targeting key communities along the boundary. The GhBC’s mission, as highlighted in its official statement, centers around strengthening boundary governance, enhancing border security, and deepening community engagement at the border region. It also aimed to assess the development and human security challenges faced by communities along the Ghana/Togo International Boundary. The assessment utilized a multi-faceted approach, incorporating stakeholder consultations, community forums, field inspections, and a thorough evaluation of International Boundary Pillars (IBPs). Following initial engagements in Kadjebi, the Commissioner General and his delegation visited the Nkwanta South Municipality, collaborating with Traditional Authorities, Assembly Officials, and residents, including a visit to Dadiase, Kue, and Chillinga. These meetings focused on critical boundary management issues, security concerns, cross-border cooperation, and the socio-economic realities impacting the communities. Specifically, representatives from the three communities voiced concerns regarding the poor state of mobile network connectivity, hindering emergency communication with security agencies. Residents of Chillinga expressed frustration with the absence of a motorable road, a significant impediment to their ability to access markets and transport goods. Nana Amanfo Monfakye I, the Dadiase Traditional Council, emphasized the lack of mobile network connectivity, highlighting it as a major obstacle to effective security response during emergencies. Furthermore, residents of Kue pointed out the lack of a road linking their community to Nkwanta, causing considerable logistical challenges. The Dadiase Amankrado underscored the need for improved road infrastructure, including a Kpassa–Tinjase road to improve accessibility and stimulate economic development. The assessment also included a review of International Boundary Pillars (IBPs) and border security, with a focus on strengthening the Commission’s operational understanding. During a dialogue with border residents of Tinjase, the community advocated for expedited construction of the Kpassa–Tinjase road, crucial for improving accessibility and fostering socio-economic development. The Commission also undertook extensive field inspections, identifying and assessing several IBP locations. The team conducted thorough investigations into the condition of the existing infrastructure and identified opportunities for strengthening the Commission’s operational approach. The field inspections included visits to border posts, where officers from the Customs Division-GRA, Ghana Immigration Service, and other security agencies were present. Discussions centered on operational challenges and proposed strategies to bolster border security while facilitating legitimate cross-border movement and trade. The team further highlighted the commitment of the GhBC to engaging relevant state Ministries, Departments, Agencies, Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies, as well as development partners, to implement necessary interventions and address the identified challenges. Beyond the stakeholder dialogues, the Commissioner General and his team conducted extensive field inspections across the entire international boundary. The team’s analysis of IBP locations revealed a range of conditions and highlighted areas requiring further attention. The team also visited selected border posts, facilitating interactions with security officials and assessing operational challenges, emphasizing the need for enhanced border security while ensuring a smooth flow of legitimate cross-border movement and trade. The overall assessment and community engagement reaffirmed the Ghana Boundary Commission’s commitment to effective boundary governance, safeguarding Ghana’s international boundaries, and advancing socio-economic development through collaborative efforts with local authorities, security agencies, traditional leaders, and development partners. The Commission’s efforts demonstrate a dedicated and comprehensive approach to addressing the complexities of border management within the region.”
