The leader of African football has issued a significant warning regarding the FIFA election, cautioning against premature challenges to Gianni Infantino’s position – a stance echoed by the first FIFA vice president, Patrice Motsepe, in an exclusive interview with Sky News. Motsepe, speaking after flying into Salzburg to meet with UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin, who has been leading the charge against Infantino’s departure, emphasized the importance of allowing the 211-member associations to decide. He stated, “If anybody has got any problem against anybody, whether it’s Gianni, whether it is anybody else, follow the process, follow the FIFA process, simple as that.” The interview follows a joint letter from UEFA and Asian and North American confederations, which denounced “deception” and a ‘breach of trust’ by Infantino, indicating a concerted effort to force his resignation before the election. Sky News reports that this initiative, initiated this week, involved a formal request to members for final approval of the secret World Cup sell-off proposals. Mr. Motsepe explained that CAF had consulted lawyers and asserted there was no breach of rules concerning these proposals, as they were submitted for final approval by the members. He further emphasized the need for a hearing, a proper forum, or tribunal, to ensure fair judgment and treatment, stating that CAF had consulted with legal experts and claimed no violation of rules concerning the secret sell-off discussions. FIFA’s presidential election system is a one-member, one-vote structure, with 47 Asian voters potentially holding significant weight in determining the outcome, given the 54 votes of the 211-member associations. The challenge to Infantino’s leadership has sparked considerable debate, with many African football stakeholders expressing a desire to support the candidate. Motsepe stressed the importance of unity, cooperation, and resolving challenges, advocating for a continued focus on developing and growing the sport. He acknowledged the difficulties facing Africa’s football landscape, highlighting the need to address these issues while moving forward, reaffirming the commitment to achieving these goals. The upcoming FIFA election presents a crucial juncture for the continent’s football future, with the potential to significantly impact the outcome and the future of African football. The confederation of African Football president, and 34 members from the CONCACAF region, have expressed concerns about Infantino’s leadership and the potential for a significant shift in the vote, with the 47 Asian voters potentially being pivotal in shaping the final result. The primary focus remains on ensuring a fair and transparent process for the election, and the outcome will undoubtedly be a key indicator of the continent’s progress and future prospects.”
