August 10, 2026 – Accra, Ghana – In a meeting held on Monday, August 10, 2026, at the residence of the Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, the Kayayei Association engaged the Vice President in a crucial discussion concerning the pressing challenges facing head porters and their livelihoods. The meeting, led by Minister Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, marked a significant step in addressing concerns regarding the kayayei community’s well-being. The Vice President addressed a delegation from the association, emphasizing the complex interplay of migration, inequality, and development – a perspective vital to understanding the situation.

The Vice President outlined the multifaceted nature of the kayayei phenomenon, acknowledging that both ‘push’ and ‘pull’ factors contribute to the movement of individuals from their communities to urban centers, necessitating interventions that address the underlying vulnerabilities inherent in such transitions. She stressed that while skills development remains a key priority, the focus must shift to empowering the women themselves, ensuring their aspirations and needs are central to any strategy.

Specifically, the Vice President reiterated the importance of training programs that provide practical tools, capital, and opportunities for beneficiaries to translate their skills into sustainable businesses. She underscored the need for a robust approach to protecting women from exploitation while simultaneously fostering economic opportunities that would allow them to improve their lives. Ms. Opoku-Agyemang expressed deep concern regarding the circumstances of children within kayayei communities, stressing the imperative of maintaining their welfare as a fundamental aspect of any long-term intervention.

She called for intensified measures to safeguard women from exploitation while simultaneously creating avenues for them to enhance their economic prospects. The Vice President commended the Ministry for Gender, Children and Social Protection and the Kayayei Association for their ongoing engagement in this vital endeavor. The government’s commitment to a holistic response, including creating opportunities, strengthening protection, and supporting vulnerable populations to realize their potential, was reaffirmed. The meeting underscored the critical need to analyze the situation through the lens of migration, inequality, and the unique circumstances of the kayayei community, recognizing that a comprehensive strategy is essential to ensuring their continued prosperity. The focus on women’s empowerment and the protection of vulnerable populations was explicitly emphasized during the discussion.

Evidence presented during the meeting – including data from the Washington Embassy – highlighted the extent of financial exploitation occurring within visa and passport application processes, particularly concerning Kwabena Donkor’s circumstances. This incident underscores the need for enhanced safeguards to prevent such situations from recurring and protecting vulnerable individuals.

Furthermore, the discussion highlighted the need to strengthen the protection of women from exploitation within the kayayei community, as well as to ensure that the welfare of children remains a central consideration in any ongoing intervention. The Vice President’s remarks reflect a commitment to creating a more equitable and prosperous future for the kayayei people, emphasizing the government’s dedication to developing a more holistic response to this complex situation.”
