Tamale Girls Senior High School (SHS) has successfully completed and commissioned a modern Information and Communication Technology (ICT) laboratory, equipped with 70 computers, marking a significant step towards enhancing digital education and equipping students with the skills crucial for success in the 21st century. The project, spearheaded by Innovation Experience and HORLAP Innovations, was formally launched under the theme, ‘A Modern Lab Today, Digital Leaders Tomorrow.’
The facility is expected to provide students with improved access to digital tools and a highly conducive environment for practical ICT education, fostering innovation and technology-based learning. The laboratory’s design prioritizes flexibility and collaboration, acknowledging the evolving demands of the digital landscape.
At a ceremony to formally present the facility to the school, Chief Executive Officer of HORLAP Innovations, Mr Kelvin Odour Aboagye, underscored the importance of students embracing beyond basic computer use and actively pursuing emerging technological fields. He stated, ‘The computers shouldn’t merely be used for typing, internet browsing, or assignments; they should be viewed as tools for building one’s future. Students can leverage them to learn website development, engineering, cybersecurity, and other cutting-edge technologies.’
Mr Aboagye encouraged the students to maximize their utilization of the facility, developing crucial digital skills that will benefit them personally, their communities, and the nation as a whole. The school anticipates a substantial return on investment in the facility, recognizing its transformative potential.
This initiative represents a substantial investment in the future of Tamale Girls SHS. Receiving the equipment on behalf of the school, Headmistress Asha Asumah expressed deep gratitude to the sponsors and other stakeholders for their unwavering support. She emphasized that the school intends to make excellent use of the facility to enhance teaching and learning and ensure that all students benefit fully from this initiative.
However, the school acknowledges considerable infrastructure and logistical challenges. They require approximately 18 additional classroom blocks and 30 dormitory blocks to accommodate the single-track system – a critical requirement for their operational structure. Ms Asumah also highlighted the urgent need for vehicles to support transportation and other school activities, including a school bus and a pickup to facilitate efficient movement within the school grounds. She appealed to the Ministry of Education, government, and other stakeholders to prioritize and address these pressing needs.
The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, acknowledged the importance of the project, recognizing its strategic alignment with Ghana’s digital transformation efforts. The ceremony also recognized the contributions of Chief Executive Officer of HORLAP Innovations, Mr Kelvin Odour Aboagye, and Headmistress Asha Asumah, who championed this essential investment in the future of Tamale Girls SHS. The new ICT laboratory is anticipated to significantly bolster practical ICT education at the school, equipping students with the skills needed to thrive in the rapidly evolving digital economy.
